Kenya & Tanzania Good Earth safari

I think we're going to go with Good Earth tours for a safari next year. I have a few questions for those who have gone on safari and/or flown into Nairobi. If you can answer some/any of these questions, I'd appreciate it. Like folks have mentioned on other threads, the planning is exciting in itself!

  • Flying into Nairobi. Hotel recommendations? Looking for mid-range or so, maybe $200/nt. Is that doable? Also plan to spend one nite on way in or out at the Giraffe Manor. Going to book that soon, as they have many dates next year filled up already. Anyone done Giraffe Manor?

  • Basic necessity question, sorry if I offend anyone---what do you do if you need to use the toilet on a game drive? I assume you go in the bush? Is there any reason to be afraid of doing that (bugs/critters/herds of animals coming up on you?)!

  • Did you drive or fly between Maasai Mara and Serengeti areas? Pros/cons. I've already been told it's expensive to fly (~$500 ea).

  • Has anyone gone from Kenya or Tanzania down to Cape Town? There don't seem to be too terribly many flight options.

Thanks!

A very good friend of mine stayed at Giraffe Manor. She said it was worth every penny. She and another friend stayed 2 nights. She even told me if she goes to Africa again (she’s done 2 safaris) she would look to stay again.

Hi Kathy, I can't answer all your questions, but I have done 2 safari's in Africa. The first one was three days in Kapama, South Africa and the second was this past July for the Great Migration. We flew from Amsterdam to Arusha, spent the night and then drove to Tarangire NP, then Ngorongoro, then Serengeti and then we flew to Uganda for Gorilla Trekking.
The answer to your second question.....sorry, but you go to the back of the safari vehicle to do your business. I used TP and then brought a small paper bag to put it in when done. No reason to be afraid as your guide will be on the lookout for wild animals.
I highly recommend Cape Town if you can figure out how to get there. We spent 4 days, fantastic city!
If you look under my profile you can see my photobook of our trip.

Basic necessity question - as Tammy said you go behind the safari vehicle or, in one instance when we were on safari, behind a large termite mound. I never worried about wild animals.

We had a tremendous safari last spring in Botswana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, although I’ve not been (yet) to Kenya or Tanzania. With each guide service, from each camp in every country, the code for needing to use the toilet was “Bushy Bushy.” The guide and/or driver had us tell them we needed a Bushy Bushy, and sometimes they’d just announce that we were pulling the Land Cruiser over for a Bushy Bushy for a quick stop. Maybe that’s a universal term for safaris, maybe it was just where we were.

Adding to what’s already been mentioned, it often meant stopping on the dirt road, women to the back and men to the front of the vehicle, or women first and men later, going just off the edge. Depending on the terrain and vegetation, people could sometimes duck behind a tree or the side of a bush, but the guides always assessed whether animals might pose a threat if anyone got too far away. Stickers get in your socks and pant legs if you get into certain weeds just off the road. Snakes and other small but concerning animals were pointed out just inches off the road, and even on the road over many game drives. In national parks, there were sometimes even facilities with toilets and running water - convenient when that was an option.

We flew Airlink, a South African airline, several times on that trip. Very good experiences. I see they have flights between Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Cape Town, but no routes with Kenya.

Based on our experience in Cape Town, I highly recommend staying at Parker Cottage ( https://www.parkercottage.co.za/ ), for its location, service, and price, and also private tours with Chris at Hannival’s Tours ( www.hannivals.co.za ).
