Japan: Taking Shinkansen from Hiroshima to Haneda airport

Hello,
We are taking an Odyssey Unlimited tour of Japan and have arranged our own airfare. We will end in Hiroshima and would like to take the train from there to the Haneda airport. ( Haneda to Minneapolis). We will be staying at the Granvia Hiroshima hotel which they say is right across the street from the train. From my research it seems that the Shinkansen will take us to Tokyo and we will need to get ourselves to the Haneda airport. It looks like we should take the Hiroshima to Shinagawa Station. I've read that is closer to Haneda than the Tokyo station. Our flight home departs at 2:00 PM. I was thinking of taking the 6:45 AM from Hiroshima arriving at Shinagawa station at 10:38 AM. An alternative would be 6:26 AM arriving Shinagawa at 10:17 AM. I would appreciate advice on how to get to the Haneda airport from the Shinagawa station. Taxi? I'm not sure how far it is to the airport from the station. We will each have a suitcase and a backpack. Additionally, does this itinerary seem workable? Any other thoughts would be very much appreciated.
If we have a reserved seat in the ordinary car, should we also make a reservation for our luggage?

Thank you,
Melinda

Can’t answer your question but just curious about date of your tour. We are on Odyssey Japan tour starting October 15 and have also booked our own air travel. We are not extending to Hiroshima but will take Shinkansen from Osaka to Yokohama for a post tour cruise. We will take taxi from Shinkansen Yokohama station to the cruise terminal. I’m sure you can do same to get from train station to Haneda airport. On my prior visit to Japan the taxis were easy to find and very convenient.

Thank you for your advice regarding the taxi! We are taking the Insiders Japan Tour in November. Odyssey had recommended a return flight that ends up being over 22 hours so we are looking at changing it to a non-stop return flight from Haneda. Trying to figure out how to get back to the airport is a bit daunting.

I fly in and out of Narita, so no help with Haneda. Here is a page on transport from Tokyo on the Haneda Airport website:
https://tokyo-haneda.com/en/toward/index.html?timestamp=1753930322127

My real question for you is:
Are you convinced that you are comfortable taking a distance train to Haneda on your flight departure day?

People have different levels of risk tolerance and, perhaps, this itinerary is necessary for you for reasons unknown to me (and not my business!) I have traveled to Japan multiple times a year since 2022 and know that I would not be comfortable being so far from departure airport - even though Japanese trains are quite reliable. There is always the time that the norm does not hold.....

Again, not my business and no need to answer, but as one who makes it a rule to be in Tokyo or at my departure airport the evening before my international flight, I wanted to pose the consideration.

ORDtraveler brings up a point I was going to mention. There's always a risk with taking a long distance train on the same day of your flight. Yes, the trains in Japan are very reliable, but that doesn't mean delays aren't possible.

Yes, you'd want to get off at Shinagawa, not Tokyo Station. From Shinagawa you could take the Keikyū metro line directly to the airport if you are OK with the metro - don't know how big your bags are. It's not that long of a ride 15-20 minutes, so I assume you could stand if you didn't get a seat, but I'm thinking at the time you mention, you are outside of rush hour so I don't think it will be that bad (but don't quote me 100%).

On the Shinkansen, you put your bags above you. There are seats at both ends of the car with oversize luggage space, but you have to reserve the seats for these. You can't just use the space without reserving the seat. And it should be luggage that is considered oversized, not typical luggage that could fit overhead.

The Granvia Hiroshima is connected to the train station. FYI--there are so many choices of restaurants actually in the station, it took me an hour to figure out which one to try. (I ended up at one specializing in Okanimiyaki. It was good.)

I know you said you wanted to take the train...but,,,there are numerous flights between Hiroshima airport and Haneda. The flight is about one hour and 20 minutes.

Change your plan.

The one you propose requires everything to work with the precision of the proverbial Swiss watch.

Waking up 500 miles away from the airport and having to be there by 11AM ( the standard 3hr recommendation for an international flight) for a 2 PM flight is only slightly less scary than bungee jumping off the top of Space Needle.

Thank you all for the great input. I changed our flight home and we now leave Haneda at 5:20 PM, giving us a lot more time to arrive at the airport and check in.
I realized a few things after speaking to Odyssey. Part of the post-tour extension to Hiroshima includes rail transportation to Hiroshima/Osaka on our last day. That is why they had suggested we fly home from KIX - INC - SEA - MSP which would take 22 hours. After reading a suggestion to take a flight to Haneda Airport I realized that we would be at the Osaka Airport (KIX) and we could book a flight from there to Haneda. That should be plenty of time to make a 5:20 PM flight back to Minneapolis. As an added bonus, that flight will only be 11 hours.
We also won't have our luggage as Odyssey will send them it Haneda where we can pick them up before check in. :)
Hopefully this is much more doable in the time we have as opposed to the train. Please let me know if something doesn't look right.

It looks like you have new plans, but to answer part of the original question, Shinagawa station would be the correct station, when you off the train you follow the red arrows on the floor to another part of the station to get the local line that goes to Haneda. Very straightforward, also lots of people you can ask for assistance if confused.

I did this exact trip in April 2025 to Haneda airport from Hiroshima. The post by Carol Now Retired is correct. Your trip will
be easy and ontime. No worries and visiting Hiroshima will be memorable. Safe travels.
