Japan questions

I'm planning my first trip there late May-early June. I know that it could be rainy, so is it important to bring water-resistant shoes? I also understand that shoes should be removed in many places, so I was thinking that step-in ones, like Sketcher is advertising, would be a good idea, except that my heels slip in the ones I've tried on, especially with small socks that I'd need to wear. I have a pair of sneakers that is reasonably water-resistant but does have a zipper, so isn't hands-free.

What has been useful for others?

Thanks!

I had both step in and sneaker types, and alternated them. Others in our group had similar. As long as you don't have difficulty managing shoes that aren't hands free, wear what you want.

And on the days you know you’ll be visiting a temple, wear easy off, easy on shoes.
We have traveled extensively in Europe, Africa and Asia and have packed a pair of easy off and on shoes on every trip.

Whatever you wear, make sure it's comfortable. Many of the shrines and temples have places you can sit and put your shoes back on.

I guess I'd also need to make sure to wear or bring socks--might need to be able to put them on and off, so I'm not walking barefoot. Too bad that the canvas Sketchers aren't water resistant, since they're so comfortable. I wonder how well the waterproofing sprays work--might try them. I've read that early June can be quite wet.

Late May/early June might not be as wet as you are fearing.

We spent about 3 weeks last May all around Kyushu (Japan's large southern island) and the weather was about as perfect as one could hope for. We only got 1 or 2 days of rain in that entire time we were there (one day was steady rain all day, a bit of a soaker; the other day was light rain in the morning, off an on for a few hours, which didn't impact us much as we were driving some distance that day, it did cause some fog and low clouds that made the scenery even more moody and evocative). Otherwise, we had not a single drop of precip in 20 days. Days were almost always sunny, warm and pleasant, never muggy and humid. Nights were cool and pleasant, a bit chilly occasionally when we were up in the mountains. We were there from May 5 - 24, and did a road trip all the way around Kyushu, starting (and ending) in Fukuoka, going around Kyushu clockwise.

Weather is of course impossible to predict accurately far in advance, so no guarantees, but we had great luck with the weather.

Japan is always great - have fun!
