Israel-Jordan

We will be in Israel for almost 2 weeks with a large tour group (March 26 - Thursday, April 7). On Thursday morning, (the 7th), the rest of the group will be going back home. (flying in & out of Tel Aviv). (The night before, April 6, we are staying overnight in Jerusalem.) We would then separate on April 7 from them & do our own thing. Our family of 4 would like to extend this by a few days to (Sunday April 10--Palm Sunday). We want to go to Jordan to see Petra; will we have enough time to go to Jordan?

Is it inexpensive to hop on a plane from Tel Aviv to Jordan? Then of course, we would have to hop on a plane back to Israel. OR, do you suggest a bus? or what??

Can we travel to Jordan on Thursday morning and cross the border & get Visa's?

We thought that we would arrive in Jordan on Thursday afternoon, stay over-night close to Petra, get up early Friday morning & spend the day hiking Petra. Then on Saturday, we should head back to Israel so that we would be able to hop on a plane Sunday morning from Tel Aviv. (We looked into flying into Tel Aviv & flying out of Amman, BUT, the plane tickets are CRAZY expensive!!!!
1. Can we find a bus or mass transporation to Jordan from Jerusalem?

  1. ANY suggestions would be sooooo appreciated!! We want to see Petra sooo bad, but we just aren't sure if this makes sense.

  2. What about COVID?? Will we need to get a PCR test to enter Jordan, or will a rapid test work that we could do on our computer?

  3. Will we need to get another COVID test to get back into Israel??

THANKS in advance for any & all advice!! I have read the threads about Jordan/Israel, but I did not find any information on this particular topic..

THANKS!! Merry

Yes, the plane tickets for a 20 minute flight are expensive, but crossing by land can be very tedious. I would suggest you look at flying into Eilat from Tel Aviv and then crossing into Jordan at Aqaba. The drive to Petra from Amman takes 4 hours and it is a shorter drive from Aqaba. You probably also want to consider spending the night in Wadi Rum. Petra deserves two days.

We had a two week tour of Israel and Jordan with Gate 1 scheduled to start March 8, but cancelled about a month ago because Israel was still not open to foreign tourists. Our tour company was to handle all the details of crossing into Jordan. Suggest posting this question under the Israel or Jordan link on TripAdvisor.

Israel did open up on Jan 9, after we cancelled. Perhaps we will do the tour next year.
