Is this itinerary worth doing because of airline schedule?

Hello all,

Planning to visit Oahu for 6 days with wife and son, also want to stay at Maui 4 days.

Here's my dilemma. I prefer to fly Delta when I can and when it makes sense. They have a one stop out of EWR both ways that connects in Atlanta and the aircraft is a A330 Airbus. I decided I want to treat us to first class tickets and make this special.

Problem is EWR-HNL is fine, but we are taking either Hawaiian air or Island air to Maui for our stay there and if I book the Delta flight, we would have to fly back to HNL for the flight home.

1) Not sure if this makes sense logistically with the itinerary, and with our last day on Maui being 5/30, I would have to get a flight back to the Oahu, so when would I do that for a 4:30 flight?

I know UA or AA has flights from OGG, but I prefer not to use them if I don't have to.

Any insight appreciated with this small dilemma.

Thank you

I see what you mean; Delta flies from OGG to LAX and Seattle, but then only flies from these to JFK, not EWR.

So, it looks like you'll have to make two changes to get home on Delta. The question is, would you prefer OGG-HNL-ATL-EWR, or OGG-LAX-(a Delta hub, like MSP or DTW or ATL)-EWR?

How's that? The flight I am looking at is EWR-HNL Round Trip. The flight home is only showing one stop on the Delta website.I'm just trying to determine if it makes sense to fly back to HNL for the flight I want. Appreciate any help. Thanks

I think what Harold is saying is don't book round trip, book multi city. Into one airport, out of the other

To be clear, I'm saying that if you book that roundtrip EWR-ATL-HNL flight, which indeed has only one stop, you then still have to add a segment from OGG to HNL separately. So, coming back from OGG to EWR is three segments (two changes) total. As long as you have to do that, do indeed look at an open jaw itinerary, which would put you all on Delta, on one ticket.

I have no experience with these flights to tell you which is the preferred way to go; I just want you to investigate the options. Your original idea may be best, but if you go open-jaw, you have the advantage of a "protected" connection, and more options if something goes wrong. From (say) LAX to DTW and DTW to EWR, there will be other Delta options if you miss one of these connections, and Delta would cover them at no extra charge to you since you'd be on one ticket. If you're on a separate ticket from OGG to HNL, and you miss the outbound flight from HNL to ATL for any reason, you're on your own, both logistically and financially.

Actually you don't have to fly to HNL from OGG as you can fly direct from OGG to the West Coast...LAX or SEA.

But then to get back to EWR you will have to take a flight from the West Coast that will be a one stop flight.

Using only Delta this is how you get home. No matter what, it is a long trip to and from Hawaii and EWR. Pick a way that is the least painful for you. But going first class will make it less painful.

Thank you all.
I am going to book the EWR-HNL leg with Delta and came to the realization that the stress of having to go back to HNL and then needing / hoping nothing goes wrong (weather delays or anything else) isn't worth it.
So I am booking an American Airlines flight at 5:50 P.M.home from OGG-EWR with a plane change in DFW. I know I like Delta and read not so many positive reviews about AA, but it's one flight and not worth the stress.

Thank you again everybody!

It's probably too late now, but Alaska Airlines has nonstops between Newark and Seattle, with connections to Honlolulu and to Maui. I've had many good experiences with them (as good as flying coach gets, anyway).

Agree with Dick and Alaska Airlines representatives seem to understand questions quickly and resolve promptly if at all possible. Staff appear to have more authority than those with other carriers. Also, various features such as price guarantees, free change and cancellation of tickets if at least 60 days before departure, relative ease in using accumulated miles and companion fares make it my favored carrier.
