Ideas on reputable insurance companys to use when traveling to Africa

Insurance for what? My husband had travel insurance for a trip with a mission group to Kenya. After being held hostage by armed gunmen and escaping, the group tried to contact the insurance company so they could evacuate the area. No response by the company. No response from the embassy after trying to contact them. Good luck.

He has returned to Africa on a few trips but doesn’t bother with insurance anymore since it was useless. What happens happens.

When I travel to countries whose health care systems are unknown to me - e.g., Turkey, Russia - I always purchase medical evacuation coverage from On-Call International. This would be especially true if I was going to a truly third world nation. Medical evacuation from such a place back to the USA could cost around $100,000. One of these medvac companies - the well regarded MedJetAssist - has a plan (MedJetHorizon) which covers evacuation caused by political unrest; here is a link to their website that explains their plan:

Please note that these are not medical care insurance plans but are evacuation services.

What are you trying to insure? Medical care and evacuation coverage are prime ones. Do you have health insurance that covers you outside your home country? Potential coverage through a credit card? MedjetHorizon may be perfect. For "normal" travel insurance, I like the ability to find and compare policies at Squaremouth.com.

Depends on what you want to insure. Cost of trip? Medical? Med evacuation? Hostile environment evacuation? The site that has been mentioned (Squaremouth.com) will allow you to compare most of the "ifs, ands, and buts" of various policies. Just be sure to check the fine print. The details are the area that gives rise to most disagreements between insurers and the insured. One size does not fit all so you are going to have to "tailor' one to fit your particular needs especially considering your destination.

Most travel policies have some medical coverage and some medical evacuation coverage. But they USUALLY will only evacuate you to the nearest hospital than can treat you. There is a company named "Med Jet Assist" that has a number of different membership plans from annually to short term. It is NOT medical insurance -- just med evacuation coverage. As long as you are more than 150 miles from home, they will, if medically necessary, fly you back to your home hospital in a medical jet with medical personnel. The also have a special policy for those who are going to be in areas subject to political unrest.Google them and see what you think,

Considering the areas your prior post indicated will by your destination, I personally would make ^%&* sure I was really well covered for whatever eventuality might arise.

We had one claim with Travel Guard. They did require certain documentation but nothing that was unreasonable. If memory serves correctly we had a check in less than two weeks after submitting our claim.

And once again, be sure to check the details of any policy
