Iceland for 2 days..rent a car or take tour

We are taking advantage of the economical airfare on Iceland Air to London next summer. So we decided to do a 2 day stopover in Iceland!
We wondered if anyone had advice on renting a car versus taking tours and Uber for transportation.
We will NOT be staying in Reykjavik but closer to the airport.

I would reconsider staying near the airport. There is no upside to that on such a short trip (or renting a car). Stay in Reykjavik (great restaurants and nightlife) and take the Flybus to/from the airport, it's timed to coincide even with very early flights. If you're only there two days, I'd spend them both in Reykjavik. Or dedicate one day for touring (there are lots of day tour companies) and one full day in Reykjavik. No Uber in Iceland - the Flybus is your best option. Everything in the city can be done on foot, it's very, very easy to get around.

I would rent a car and spend 1 of the days doing the golden circle drive - well worth it. I would not stay near the airport since it is 45 mins from the city.

How many in your group? I think if there are only two of you I would take a tour one day. If more than 2 and you don't mind driving, then a car would be o.k. In any event, I would stay in the city rather than the rather isolated airport.

As mentioned by others, staying in Reykjavik with its many interesting sites (easily walkable) is preferable to staying out at the airport (45 minutes drive). However, the Blue Lagoon (allow several hours to half a day) and the Viking World Museum are located near Keflavik airport but you would need transportation to go to either one or both no matter where you stay. We did a 2 night stopover with Icelandair en route to Copenhagen and would like to return and stay longer to see more of the country someday.
