My family and I have a Mediterranean cruise planned in the fall that will begin in Venice and end in Athens. We will be stopping in various locations in Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, Turkey, etc. Our plan is to arrange our own itinerary, with private tour guides rather than pay a fortune for the cruise tours/guides.
I am not sure where to start in locating reputable, trustworthy guides. Any suggestions anyone might have would be most appreciated.

Try toursbylocals.com. They have a link entitled Shore excursions. We used them on a British Isles cruise and a Cuban cruise.
Rick lists guides he recommends in all his guidebooks.
I would suggest that you repost this question in General Europe as Nigel suggested. Include the cities in the various locations where you will be in port and want to hire a guide. That will allow us to give you recommendations for names of specific guides that we have used.
