We are going to Vietnam and Cambodia in January and would love advice on hotels for Hanoi. We are arriving two days early and want to stay in a charming hotel that exudes calm. A great spa and roof top bar would be appreciated. Ideally we would like to be close to one of the lakes for peaceful walks. I've poured over reviews and there honestly don't seem to be bad choices.

Sorry no hotels to recommend as I stayed with a tour (mediocre hotel) and a friend (great!). Are you meeting a tour? Are their accommodations not what you are looking for? Even the five star hotels in Hanoi are very affordable so if you find something that ticks your boxes go for it.
Unrelated but I always recommend booking a free tour with Hanoi Kids. A fun way to meet an interesting local young person and help them practice English too.

We loved the Hanoi Pearl. Boutique hotel, maybe a 2 minute walk from Hoan Kiem on a relatively quiet side street, great rooftop bar, fantastic comfortable room, typically amazing Vietnamese service, nice breakfast buffet. We didn't use the hotel spa but there are literally 20 within walking distance if you want to chose there or someplace offsite.
