Anyone been to Hong Kong? Is there a Rick Steve's type guru out there that is specific to that area? Is it manageable as a couple to tour or would you advise a group tour? Thanks
No frapping way on a tour of any kind.
Study up and do it on your own -- or don't study and go get lost. It's hard to say which would be better.
Been to Hong Kong several times. It's a big, safe, modern, cosmopolitan city with excellent public transit, and english is widely spoken (it's one of the official languages being a former British territory). If you have traveled to places like London or Paris on your own, HK isn't any more challenging.
While there are budget hotels in Hong Kong, this is the one city you may want to splurge for a luxury hotel. They are amazing, with amenities that will blow your mind; very decadent.
thanks gentlemen , no tour, top floor got it!
Definitely do it yourself. Hong Kong is pretty easy. We followed some of the walking tours outlined in the Frommers guide. It's a fabulous city, spend as many days there as you possibly can.
I was in HK on my own and had a great time. I stayed at the Salisbury YMCA - superb location, very nice hotel (nothing like you'd expect from the Y), and reasonable prices. It usually fills up quickly so book early. It's on the Kowloon side, which I found much more interesting than the Hong Kong side. I did a day trip to Macao and wished I'd spent at least one night and two full days there. I took the HOHO bus and liked it. The Kowloon route helped me get oriented quickly and the HK route was good to see that side. For just getting around, the subway is faster. I went to the flower market on my first day and bought an armload (quite cheap), had fresh fragrant flowers in my hotel room for the next 5 days.
Well, we took a tour, a "heritage" tour, arranged through the tourist office. We were a small group in a van and it was thoroughly enjoyable, but not for the likes of our Ed!
