Has anyone stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian recently? What did you think? As usual, the reviews online are mixed, but there do seem to be quite a few suggesting that it is a bit run down. TIA.
Can't comment on the specifics of the place, but we just completed a 3 night stay at the Naniloa next door and walked by it every morning we were there. Looks nice enough from the outside - well kept exterior, etc., and you really can't beat the location right next to Coconut island and Lili'uokalani Park. The views from the rooms are no doubt similar to those we had at the Naniloa ... which were spectacular.
Out of curiosity I scanned their reviews and you're right - it truly is a mixed bag. I did note that overall it's actually rated a tick higher than the Naniloa, and FWIW we were quite happy with our stay there for comparison purposes.
We enjoyed The Grand Naniloa Hotel by Doubletree. We have stayed there twice. Great location. Free parking. I have a personal blog post if you are interested. Shows thing in that area too. nunezfamilytravels.com is the name. There is a small pool, but you can also jump in the water right out back of the hotel and snorkel. They also have a shop to rent kyaks and other things. Carlsmith Beach is around the corner where we saw turtles both times. Have fun.
