Help with Maui

Taking my wife, her mother and a family friend to Hawaii for two weeks in September with four nights on Maui. We were there in 2014 and stayed in a condo near Ka'anapali Beach, but while it worked for three people it will not for four. I'm looking for any recommendations you may have. In Europe we stayed in small hotels, B&Bs, apartments and even a farmhouse, all with three people. The fourth person (no I can't leave her out) changes the dynamics a bit and I'd struggling to find what we need at a price we can afford ($250-$350), even through places like VRBO. Next year it is back to Europe where this is easier. Any help would be appreciated.

A quick search on VRBO with random September dates shows me plenty in your price range. I prefer Napili/Kapalua to Kaanapali. Napili Bay beach is lovely. Here's a random listing I'd look at if I were you. Nice view, sleeps 6 in 2 BD, lots of good vrbo reviews. Well within your budget. And this is just one of many I saw. https://www.vrbo.com/357497

It's been a decade or more since our last Maui visit. Our Maui preference was a Kihei condo as a less hectic location than Lahaina and cheaper than Kaanapali. But I understand that Kihei has been since discovered.

Not sure what you are looking for in your set up for 4 people. We stayed at the Maui Banyan in Kihei last summer for my sons soccer tournament. We had a two bedroom unit for under $200 a night (Kamaaina/local rate). You should be able to get the same for room, for over $200 a night. The room was actually two units with a door connecting them. One unit had the living area, kitchen, bedroom with a queen size bed, bathroom/washer driver. The other unit had two twin beds? and a bathroom.
Yes, Kihei has changed in the last decade.

Thank you all for your reply. Since there are four of us... my wife, her 91 year old mother and a female friend...we need at least a place with two bedrooms, one with twin beds or three bedrooms. In the only time I was on Maui we stayed in the Ka'anapali area which seemed a long way from the rest of the island sites, i.e. Wailea, Hana, etc., and I'm open to other parts of Maui. I looked at Kehei and it seems to be reasonably priced, but can be crowded. We plan to explore the island in the 3 1/2 days we will be there, so the place we stay will mainly be for sleeping and near restaurants, grocery stores and the like. Since this will probably be my MIL's last overseas trip with us how much I have to spend is not an issue. Thanks again.

Check out Papakea Resort through VRBO. That have 2br+loft units on the top floors. I prefer the units with mini-split A/C units. They are much quieter and keep the bedrooms nice and cool.

A lot of the vacation home rentals are handled by local real estate agents and many list their properties here. I've always had good luck doing this on the Big Island usually getting a 2-3 bedroom house for less than any resort, condo or B&B.

As a long time resident of Maui, I can tell you that the month of September is our low season. You should be able to find a great price on a condo at that time. Most resorts will not advertise any specials this far in advance. I would suggest staying close to the areas you wish to explore since you have only 3 days.

I encourage you to stay in Hana for at least one night. We found a lovely house to rent through VRBO.
The price was reasonable.

Also Paia is a wonderful town and is centrally located. You can't go wrong if you stay here. I 've heard good things about Haiku, but never stayed there. Upcountry Maui is also lovely...check out the Alli Kula Lavender Farm. Kula is a nice area, very quiet and perhaps a bit more precipitation.

Wailuku is an interesting area and central to the entire island. We stayed at the Old Wailuku Inn and really enjoyed it. I don't know if they have the kind of adjoining rooms you are looking for. But its a really nice place--maybe a little more than you want to pay. I really liked that area--quiet, pleasant, some good restaurants and central to the rest of Maui.

We stayed at Pilialoha Cottage in upcountry Maui this past winter. https://www.vrbo.com/433702 or http://pilialoha.com/. They have a new two bedroom cottage on the property, which they were renting occasionally when we were there. It's not listed, so you'd have to ask about it. I was curious, so I inquired about the cost, which I do believe is within your price range. It's not far from Makawao town, and only a half an hour down the hill into Kahului.
