We would like to go on a three week or so tour of Australia. We would like to see the major cities and the Great Barrier Reef and Tasmania. Does anyone have any suggestions for tour companies that might be good. Not a super expensive tour, but one with a RS sized tour group?
I don't have a suggestion for a company, but with 3 weeks you'd be hard pressed to see all the major cities and the Great Barrier Reef and Tasmania. Definitely pick a region to tour for 3 weeks.
I don’t know your age group, but I have heard lots of good things about Road Scholar. This is one of their several Australia tours:
You might also check Odysseys Unlimited, but their tour includes both Australia and New Zealand.

Odysseys Unlimited goes to Australia and New Zealand but not Tasmania. They do small group tours and are a good tour company. We have done 6 tours with them. I highly recommend them. Take a look at their Australia/New Zealand tour.
Hi Bill.
I am not sure you will find something RS like for 3 weeks covering that amount of territory. Hobart (Tas) to Cairns (Great Barrier Reef) is about the distance of LA to NY.
Personally I reckon your best bet is to break it up into smaller parts.
Just a rough off the top of my head sort of plan.
Fly into Melbourne, connect to Hobart (1 hr flight).
A night or 2 in Hobart then a 3 to 4 day small group tour from Hobart picking off some great Tassie spots. Tassie is a gun by the way but is often overlooked by overseas tourists.
Back to Hobart (or Launceston Tassie's no.2 city) and back to Melbourne (where this lad was born and bred). A night or 2 in Melbourne, same deal, 3 or 4 or 5 day small group tour. Back to Melbourne, fly to Sydney (around an hour) and ditto. Then fly to Brisbane or the Gold Coast for a night or 2 then onto Cairns and grab another small group tour. Fly home from either Cairns or Brissy.
The State's (Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland) tourism websites would be a good starting point.
Might be worth a thought.
Cheers.
We have been to Australia twice and generally you don't need to do it on a guided tour. Guided tours are expensive.
However, look for day tours in the cities that you visit. Sydney, Melbourne and Perth are great places to visit.
From Sydney, take a day tour north of the city to wine country, as do the Blue Mountains and take a harbor cruise.
From Melbourne, take a day tour to the wine country. Also, don't miss doing a two day tour that goes to the Great Ocean Highway south of the city and to see the Penguins come in at Phillip Island.
The Great Barrier Reef you can do from places like Cairns in the north.
If you can't find private tours on the internet, look at Viator.com
Thanks for all the excellent feedback! I suppose laying out the trip myself might be cheaper and, unlike continental Europe, English is easier. Quite a time difference. A tour is easier, and I do think you save on the hotels and, hopefully, find some pleasant people to travel with. I have found a tour on "Globus'!! that hits most of what I want. OAT Travel also has an Australian tour and you can add a pre trip to Tasmania. I can pirate the main features of each tour. We will see, thanks!!
One thing about visiting Tasmania, when we were in Melbourne, we talked to a travel agent about going to Tasmania, but it was the tourist season and apparently it is flooded with Aussies during that time. We were there in the March/April time frame.
I can't say I have experienced issues with Tassie being flooded with Aussie tourists. I have been several times in high season and it certainly hasn't been problematic.
Certainly nothing like the high season crowds in places like Phillip Island, Great Ocean Road Mornington Peninsula or the Blue Mountains.
If you are coming our way again I would strongly encourage you to go. Last year we were there in April and had good weather.
Bill. What are the points of interest for you?
OAT (Overseas Adventure Tours) has a tour to Australia and New Zeeland that includes Tasmania. We have taken a tour with OAT previously and were happy. Small group, time off to do you own thing and some lunches and dinners, they handle all luggage, tips except for tour guide are included.
