Good neighborhood/hotel for 3 nights December 2019 in San Francisco

What is a nice, less touristy, neighborhood with restaurants and public transit in San Francisco?

Check the Handerly hotel half block from Union Square. Indoor pool even.
Family owned for many years. I am a local but stay there for downtown events from time to time.
Specials available at times, BART a few walkable blocks.
