Going to India and have a tour, question about a hotel

We have a tour of India and wanted to book a day in advance to rest from the let lag. Unfortunately, the hotel we will be staying with the tour group has no vacancies for that day.

We could book The Holiday Inn at the New Delhi Airport. It is not in the airport but very close (not to be confused with the Holiday Inn Express). Has anyone stayed at this airport and how convenient is it to get to upon arrival at that airport. Also, transport the next day into the city, any suggestions?

Have you talked to the tour organizer? Do they have any recommendations for a hotel and/or car hire (which comes with a driver in India)?

I will start off by saying that I have not stayed near the New Delhi Airport and have no personal knowledge of any hotel there.

Last month I was in Mumbai and I was very happy with the Orchid hotel, which had a paid pick-up service from the airport. I found it by looking at Google maps and then emailing a few shortlisted ones to ask about services we wanted....Orchid seemed the best fit However, that chain does not seem to have a presence near the New Delhi airport.

I just did a very cursory search and it looks like Hotel Radisson Blu Plaza does help with car hire, which would be great for your sightseeing the day after arrival. You could ask them for options to get to the hotel from the airport. I guess you could email The Holiday Inn too. What time does your flight arrive?

Its been many years (6-7) since I was in Delhi. Uber works well in the main cities in India so I would not limit myself to stay near the airport. My guess is that your flight is going to land late in the evening so you are going to have to have to take some transportation to your hotel (I'm guessing there is not going to be free shuttles to any of the hotels around the airport) and hence, I would choose a hotel that is closer to where you want to spend the next day and then take another Uber when you are ready to switch to the Tour hotel.

Enjoy Delhi and the amazing world heritage sites around the capital.

Our hotel for the Tour will be the Eros Hotel, which appears to be an excellent choice.
Unfortunately, they had no availability for our arriving one day early.

We like Crowne Plaza hotels and I see there are three in New Delhi, not sure which is closest to the Eros Hotel.

Use Google maps to see which of the Crowne Plazas is close to the Eros or to where you want to spend the day before the tour start. Either way, you will end up with an uber or other transport ride to the Eros hotel.

Noting that the first metro stop from the terminal is very close to the Holiday Inn, but I’ve never ridden that metro. The same metro continues on to Connaught Place which is the center of old New Delhi, and the area I would try to stay in to be able to walk to some things. I’m sure the Eros is a great hotel but AFAIK not near main sights.

I am also looking at India tour companies - just curious - who did you decide to go with?

I just returned from a Road Scholar trip in India. We stayed at the Suryaa New Delhi Hotel and I see that it is just a few minutes away from the Eros Hotel. I contacted them by email and they arranged a driver to pick me up from the airport. It cost the equivalent of about $28. (I arrived after midnight.) It was quite a nice hotel with two good restaurants and a friendly, responsive staff.

Our tour of India and Nepal is a 12 day tour with Gate 1 Travel.
Cost including airfare from JFK for two is about $8000.

We have done four tours with Gate 1 and haven't been disappointed at all. Their tours are priced low and if you go on their website, sign up for email updates and you will find that sales are common and you can get even cheaper tours that way.

Gate 1 offers several different types of tours, river cruises, bus tours mostly. Some tours are small group (tend to be a bit more expensive, but still reasonable).
