Going to Casablanca

We will be going on a cruise from Casablanca to Barcelona in April. I've looked at various airlines and Iberia and Royal Air Maroc have the shortest flights with Air Maroc offering a direct flight. However, when I read the reviews of these airlines, they were horrible. I thought about going to Madrid on a different airline and then just finding a short flight to Casablanca, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea.

Can anyone give me suggestions on how to plan this? We will miss the cruise ship if there are any delays and while we are already planning a few days in Casablanca before we embark, I've read horror stories of three-day delays and cancelled flights, etc.

Neither of these two airlines got more than a 3/5 rating and on one site, one of them got a 4/10. Not exactly something that puts one's mind at ease. Ironically, the few extremely positive reviews I read were "unverified" while all the negatives were verified reviews.

Any suggestions?

When I flew to Casablanca I went via Heathrow. I was flying from Vancouver and stayed a couple of days with a friend in Twickenham before picking up a BA flight from Heathrow to Casablanca.

Thanks for your reply. I really wasn't comfortable flying on either Iberia or RAM, so I dug a little further and Delta (operated by Air France) had some good flights (time wise and cost wise), so I am considering booking on Delta. I just have to decide whether to go with Comfort + or Premium Comfort.

Casablanca is not a great destination in Morocco. About the only thing worth seeing is the huge mosque.

If you go there, head out to Marrakesh, Fes, Agidar and other great places.

It's your salad but I have not had issues with Iberia. I have flown Iberia to and from North Africa from both Malaga and Madrid. I never had any issues with them. Their prices are hard to beat. I have not looked at reviews for their performance and this was all pre-Covid travel FWIW

Almost any EU airline will get you there if you want to avoid Air Marco or Iberia. It comes down to where you want to connect - LHR, CDG, FRA, etc.

Casablanca is the starting point of our cruise; we want to get there a day ahead of time just in case there is a delay somewhere. I do admit I was a bit apprehensive about Iberia or RAM because of so many negative reviews. I realize that a lot of satisfied folks don't write as many reviews as the ones who've encountered problems, but too many of them stated that customer service was awful. I haven't booked any travel yet, so I do appreciate all the comments and suggestions.

Thanks for your suggestion geovagriffith. I like Marrakesh, too, so we may put it on the pre-cruise list.

I just flew RAM roundtrip NYC to Casablanca Dec 1/Dec 10. Seats were fine. In-flight entertainment was fine. Food was ok. Flight attendants all seemed stand-off-ish and grouchy and perhaps put-out about having to do their job. The only joy they seemed to have was in telling people the bathrooms were closed when not at cruising altitude. I want to go back to Morocco but I'd avoid RAM next time I go.

Casablanca is not a place to visit but just use to enter Morocco from a ship. Go a few days ahead and stay in Marrakech. We couldn’t get out of Casablanca fast enough.

There are flights to Fes and Marrakech from many European airports. If you're going to avoid flying straight to Casablanca anyway, you may as well check out connecting routes to Fes or Marrakech instead.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughtful comments. I now have much more information to ponder.

I will not book another flight with RAM. My experience with them required getting my credit card company involved to get a refund for a fully refundable ticket purchase.

I found Casablanca worthy of a visit. It provided a very different (commercial) perspective of the country.

Agree that Casablanca does not merit time other than for travel connections. Having travelled throughout Morocco, we enjoyed Marrakech but found Fes much more interesting.

You have all been very helpful for me too :) I'm going to Morocco with my sister at the end of May and I'm starting to look at flights...and the reviews of RAM were, ah, concerning to say the least. We won't be in Casablanca, but Marrakech and the coast on our tour.

Well, I'm hoping the the good experience posted by Cristen will be one that we experience, too, as we've booked the flight from Madrid to Casablanca (where we pick up the cruise) on RAM. We are flying Singapore Air to Madrid, and the schedules on RAM seemed to work the best to get us to Casablanca. So, fingers crossed and a quick prayer, we'll do okay with that flight. The cruise ends in Barcelona so we are now dealing with Iberia who will take us to Santiago de Compostela. We are remaining optimistic and positive that this will be a wonderful adventure. I'll report back, but it'll probably be too late for you, Anna, as you'll be booking your flights pretty soon. Happy travels!

For that short of a flight time, I'd use RAM again. I would not use them again for long-haul.

Thanks. I got badly burned money-wise on that flight because I had to change the date, so I'm hoping the actual flight will be okay. After that, I'm through with RAM.
