I signed up for a Holland America cruise next year, and I’m essentially paying for two people even though it’s just me going. Sure, I could have selected a single room, but it wouldn’t have been a nice balcony room.
I’m also taking my first Rick Steves tour later this year and had to pay an extra $600 for the single supplement. I probably wouldn’t mind that as much if I were guaranteed a double room to myself, but my understanding is that I may end up in a much smaller single room depending on the hotel. I knew that when I signed up and accepted it, but it still feels a little frustrating.
Carrie, very rarely have I had just a single bed while on a RS tour. It can, and does, happen occasionally but usually in very expensive markets and is not the norm.

Just the other day, I received a tour brochure in the mail for a trip (won't say where) and the single supplement is $3300, almost 50% of the entire tour price!
It's very discouraging because many single people do travel and the supplement makes it prohibitive, at least for me. I was really interested in this particular tour that I got the brochure for, but not with a supplement of $3300.
I can stomach $800 but not $3300.
