We did Quito and the Galapagos a couple of years ago with Celebrity Cruises. We were in Quito for three days. Our tour group visited key sites in the city. It was interesting. One thing, we were warned several times to stay together and to protect our valuables. Our group has a security man along with us to protect us. We were safe, but not sure that I would want to wander just anywhere in that city. When driving through the city from/to the airport you could see many buildings with high walls with barbed wire on top.

By the way, the Galapagos was amazing.

Definitely check on the upsurge in gang violence taking place in the country. I’m not sure how bad it is in Quito. There have been a couple reports in the news recently. When we were there a while back petty crime was the only thing to be concerned about, but that no longer seems to be the case.

We walked around the historic center on our own only during the day. If we ventured anyplace else, day trips, we hired a driver through the hotel.
