Fox Rent a Car

Flying into John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California in February to use up some expiring points and vouchers. Getting sticker shock with cost of rental cars. Average price for a standard car is about $110/day when usually it's around $40-50. The exception is Fox Rent a Car which is in that $40/day range, but I'm not getting the warm and fuzzies with them; likely because I've never heard of them. Does anyone have an opinion or experience they can offer?

*I've looked at off-airport rentals and prices are still high.

Go with Fox, they are legit. See if you can get a discount booking direct on their website. It’s still early, l would continue checking prices over time and cancel if you get a better deal. I have rebooked a number of times using this approach (the opposite of “book and don’t look back”)

We used Fox, they are a British company, last April in Texas. Our flight was changed then delayed and we were 20 minutes late. We had called from the airport to let them know. Good to go, no. When we got to the counter they had given our cars away. We were 10 people there for a wedding, Not one other car rental agency had a car available. There was a cheerleading competition going on. We had to use Uber all weekend. Any way, we put in complaints and someone finally called after about a week, from England. They told us if we had PREPAID the cars they would have had to hold the reservations. We always PREPAY all car rentals now.

I would like to suggest you go through Costco travel for rental car quotes. It is usually quite better than other quotes.

I've used Fox Rent a Car several times, in Las Vegas, San Diego, and Orlando.

I feel they were satisfactory, but a couple things to be aware of. They're normally not located at the airport terminal, so you have to allow more time for the shuttle to/from their rental lot, and they aren't open 24 hours if your flight's too early or late. Pre-COVID, the cars definitely did not look brand new. I documented pebble dents and I found someone else's long strand of hair in the back seat. And they typically are a hard sell with the add-ons, in Orlando I had to forcefully decline their toll pass.

But I got no surprise charges, the cars drove fine, and I wasn't delayed at the airport. So I'd use them again if they still dramatically undercut their competitors' prices.

We used Fox in Puerto Rico, and they had great rates. As someone else mentioned, they were not at the airport and we had to arrange a special pickup from them to their rental lot. And there was a big hangup with some paperwork they required for insurance purposes that had me calling our insurance agent back home to fax some papers to them before we could finish renting the car we'd reserved. Other than that, we were pleased with them and would consider them reputable.

Thanks for the replies. I found out yesterday that Fox is owned by Europcar. The John Wayne location is off airport property but they do have a shuttle. I'm reading reviews that say the shuttle is inconsistent and people have waited 45 minutes to an hour. Seems to me that like other budget brands in other industries; I'll get what I pay for. I've booked the 'pay-later' option and will continue to monitor the prices. Enterprise is my brand of choice but their pricing in most locations is like a roller coaster and goes from low to high and everything in between on a whim. Right now it's the highest out there.

I've flown into John Wayne and waited for the shuttle. It's really not a big deal, especially since it's a small, easy airport and the weather is always lovely year round. And certainly worth it with such a price spread between various brands. I realized a long time ago that I wasn't willing to pay a premium for Hertz or Enterprise and have gotten perfectly good substitutes from "lesser" outfits. I look forward to the day when more electric cars are offered as rentals (provided that charging stations become more plentiful of course, but that's not really a major issue in CA)

I just booked Fox at Denver International Airport for a week in March. Less than half the price of everyone else. Hopefully it's not too good to be true.

Anyone ever gone the U-Haul route? There is a U-haul location just a short taxi ride from the airport where I can get a pick-up truck for $200 for the week including insurance. 3.5X less than most rental options and half the cost of Fox.

We are renting a car over the holidays in Palm Springs. We also got sticker shock. Even our usual Costco rentals were out of this world. Using Turo for the first time, it was half of what we were seeing.
