Hi everyone,
I'm planning to arrange my trip to vietnam. This would be my first time. I'm a girl and I will go solo for 4 days, with a low - medium budget. Can you recommend me some good places? I prefer to go to many places that I can visit for a day. Thank you so much!
What things about Vietnam interest you?
What kinds of memories do you want to make?
Where are you coming from and going to afterwards?
What is your daily budget?
What month of the year?
With 4 days you really only have time for 1-2 cities; one of which will be Saigon or Hanoi. They have different vibes but both are awesome. You could easily spend all 4 days in one of those cities and not get bored. There are also day trips from both of those cities.
welcome to the forum magnolia11. The questions Chris asked are essential to answer, the more information you give the better answers you will get. I don't know what a "low-medium" budget is, but four days really only lends itself to one location. Vietnam is a large country and it takes a lot of time to travel between places. With only four days if you move around a lot you will do nothing but move and see very little. Saigon, Hanoi, or Hue would be three cities that would be suitable for a very short visit.

@Chris
Hi Chris, thank you for the reply.
- I think i’m interest more with city view, city center, and culinary exploration. Also to see the local culture. I was thinking about about Hanoi, Hoi An, Danang, Phu Quoc, but i’m not sure yet. I will check about Saigon too. Thank you for mention! Also i want to concider places that is safe for tourist and solo female traveler.
- For the memories, i think i want to really feel and remember more about the local people, culture, and scenery. Actually this trip is one of my plan for the healing. I’ve been feeling stuck and stress in my work routine, but also I dont have many times for a holiday. Now I want to feel different, happier and enjoying the vibes. I also hope i can even make new friends there.
- I will come from Indonesia
- For now i think my daily budget is probably $40.
- Around september or october. Is it okay or better to go in another months?
I appreciate for any recommendation from you. Once again thank you Chris.
@CL
Hi CL. Yes thank you! I added more reply about some detail of my preference. I know 4 days are so short, but i think that’s what I have now.
@Going234
Hi Going234, thank you so much! It really helps me to find more information.
With that amount of time, I would pick a place that you can get a direct flight from wherever you are coming from Indonesia. I would pick one city and do day trips. I'm not sure if your budget is in US dollars, but depending on your hotel preference you may need to stretch the budget. September can still be very rainy in the middle and southern parts of the country, and it will be very warm. Good luck to you planning.
With 4 days (focusing on city view, culinary), I agree that you should choose 1 large city, spend time there and do some day trips. September or October in Hanoi the weather would be milder, not as hot as summer (while in Saigon and Danang still quite warm). Of note, 9/26/2026 is mid-Autumn festival, and would be a nice occasion to be in the country to see how people celebrate.
A potential itinerary from Hanoi (assuming you arrive on day 0 and leave on day 5):
-day 1 and 2: Hanoi (old quarter, 2 lakes. ethnic museum, citadel, water puppet,... and try the food, cafe...) The foods are particularly good. If you are there during mid-autumn festival, make sure you go to old quarter in the evening
-day 3: can do day trip to Halong Bay
-day 4: can do day trip to Trang An
A possible day trip (although would be very tight and exhausting) is take a night train to Dong Hoi, arrive early morning the next day, do a day trip to Phong Nha - Ke Bang national park, take the night train back to Hanoi, arrive early morning the following day. Would recommend stay in Hanoi and do some short trips. TBH, to relax and enjoy the city, I think you can spend the full 4 days in Hanoi
From Da Nang, you can do Hoi An (total 3 days for those 2) and Hue (1 day). Some of the beaches near Da Nang are very nice
From Sai Gon, the city itself needs 2 days, then can do day trip to the Mekong delta
Just some suggestions
@CL
Yes I agree. I will take the direct flight. I think I will finally just pick 1 or 2 city and do day trips as suggested because I only have few times and budget. Thank you so much CL!
@ducdien
Hi ducdien,
I never heard about mid autumn festival before. So thank you for giving me good ideas! After some thoughts, I think I will probably just visit 2 cities because I have limited time. Thank you for the itinerary too! I will check more information for each places you mentioned, and will decide the priority. Tbh Ha Long Bay cruise seems so wonderful, but I will consider. I want to spend the rest in the city center I guess. If I have more times in the future, I really want to try those adventure activities. Thank you so much ducdien, I will keep your recommendations on my notes.
For now, I think I will just have Hanoi and Hoi An as primary options, with restaurant, street food and cafe hopping, and festival you mentioned, also coconut boat ride seems crazy but fun lol, and the lantern boat too. Then buy some souvenirs, and maybe look for Ao Dai to buy (because it seems so pretty). Then capture some moments with city views. My plans still can change, and for sure I will still look more information about the places everyone here mentioned. Once again, thank you!
@everyone
Also, if anyone has recommendation where to buy souvenirs or local markets, please let me know.
Thank you :)
Hoi an is an area that may check many boxes, but decisions all depend on where you can fly to from Indonesia. Hoi an is a long train ride or a flight from Hanoi and is going to cut into your budget...which is quite small if it includes your accommodation. Hoi an or Hue also will eat up a lot of your 4 days just getting there and back to an airport. If you can fly in and out of Hue, then consider it. I think you can only afford one city. Hanoi also has a lot to offer. Saigon didn't excite me, personally. Unfortunately, we here are tourists that are going to be more likely to utilize tourist services that cost more than your budget. I expect there are local buses to take you out of the city, but you'll want to research that. Also understand the size of the country. On a budget for 4 days, 2 locations eats up both time and money.
I would look at your local online booking platforms for pricing of things before committing to flights. They may be better priced than what we can see from North America. I also suggest using the Indonesia TripAdvisor(id (dot) tripadvisor (dot) com) to ask the same question. This will draw answers that may be more relevant to you.
I’m in Vietnam right now. 4 days is not enough time. Consider that traveling here can be exhausting, it is an assault on the senses. Heat, noise, crowds, making sure you stay alive crossing the street.
I love it here, but I do have to manage myself here more than other countries I visit and having time to relax, sleep-in, and space things out helps.
@acechrist. OP is coming from Indonesia which most likely works in her favour for adjustment.
@MariaF
Hi MariaF, thank you for the advices. If in the end I only have 1 option, I think I will stick to Hoi An. I heard there will be a direct flight to Da Nang from Indonesia, then find transportation or taxis from airport to Hoi An.
@acechrist
Yes, the situation is more likely similar with Indonesia. Thanks for the heads-up. However I hope you can still enjoy more times there!
Hoi An won't be a direct flight from anywhere. You will be flying in and out of Da Nang Airport-DAD (which happens to be the old wartime US airbase) and taking a taxi ride to Hoi An. It's very doable but it adds a wrinkle and will eat up maybe 40 minutes each way.
Hoi An is a pretty good choice. It's a lovely city and definitely the most tourist-facing city in all of Vietnam. You'll have great food, great pictures and you will meet some wonderful people; many of them tourists. I will say it will show a somewhat stilted image of Vietnam if that is the only thing you ever get to see. It'd be like going to Denpasar and thinking you've seen Indonesia.
I'm not trying to talk you out of Hoi An, and as a "first bite" of the Vietnam apple, it will be very easy and comfortable to manage. Hopefully, that experience encourages you to visit Hanoi and Saigon among other smaller towns plus the countryside. My next trip will probably focus on some smaller cities and the Mekong Delta.
If you can get a direct flight to Hue/Hoi an, that's great.
If culture is of interest, there is a free photography gallery/museum that is beautiful. A French photographer has been capturing women from different tribes in their traditional costumes over the last number of years. There are also some of the costumes on display. He has also made documentaries on the weaving and embroider processes. His name is Rehahn and the gallery is now called the Precious Heritage Museum and Art Gallery.
@Chris & @MariaF
Yes there is no direct flight to Hoi An, that's why I said earlier about taking direct flight to Da Nang instead.
@Chris
Thank you so much for all the advices, Chris. Hopefully I can visit Hanoi and Saigon too in the next time. And I wish you will have a nice trip in the next cities!
@MariaF
Oh it's so interesting! I just checked the place and it's not far from hoi an market. I will add it to my list. Thank you for your recommendation MariaF
Phong nha in Vietnam!
but you will need atleast 2 days if you really want to enjoy it. one of the most under rated destination of Vietnam...
i did the hung thoong cave tour in phong nha by jungle boss in feb 2026 (just last month) and still think its one of my best memory from Vietnam besides Hoi an boat trip at night ☺️
if u are on super budget then just do self guided cave tours like paradise cave, dark cave with mud bath, paradise cave and duck stop.
hope you have the time of your life in Vietnam. its my fav country for travel!
@brenda-the-noob-traveler
Hi brenda, thank you so much for the recommendation! I checked the jungle boss website and yes they have many tour options. It's very interesting. I will keep it on my notes. But for my first time in Vietnam, I think I planned to visit hoi an first, because I only have a few days off, and I want to do many things in hoi an. Again thank you Brenda!
So 4 nights in Hoi An looks like:
1: Travel day...fly to DAD, Grab to hotel in Hoi An. Explore Hoi An in evening
2: more Hoi An
3: Day trip of your choice; beach, My Son, Marble Mountain
4: Wrap up Hoi An, shopping, pick up any clothing
5: Grab back to DAD, Fly home.
One of your Hoi An nights, you should definitely go to the Hoi An Memories show over on the island. I would get the middle exposed seats and choose a night based on the chance of rain. You don't really need to buy super far in advance and you don't need the expensive gold ticket.
@Chris
I think I will just stick to cafe and restaurant hopping, and then market, to find souvenirs and ao dai. Then taking the boat rides, and a bit of museum. The rest I just want to enjoy the city view. But thank you for the recommendation of the show, I will keep it on my notes for my next travel chance. Thank you Chris

The TV program "60 Minutes" aired a segment on another Vietnam cave, Hang Sơn Đoòng, the world's largest. A very interesting 13 minutes.
Son Doong, the world's largest cave passage — big enough to fit a skyscraper — is deep inside a Vietnamese jungle. Exploring the dark caverns, home to beautiful rock formations and a river, takes days.

The BBC series "Planet Earth III" also aired a segment on this cave

The location is very remote. It took "60 Minutes" hiking a day and a half thru the jungle to reach it. There is limited tourism, but none available in 2026.
Make sure you have cash on you when entering and leaving the country. Extortion by immigration officials is very real and happened to us when leaving the country a few days ago. Was scary situation.
So what month do you decide to go?
Make sure you have cash on you when entering and leaving the country. Extortion by immigration officials is very real and happened to us when leaving the country a few days ago. Was scary situation.
Could you elaborate? Where were you and what happened?
This was at DAD. I won’t go into explicit detail but we were extorted for money to leave the country by immigration. Once we greased their palm after going around in circles, we could proceed.
There are numerous instances online you can find that support this.
a bit more information - 36 Hours in Hoi An, Vietnam (gift link valid for 14 days)
Hoi An, an ancient town by Vietnam’s central coast, offers undeniable allure: timeworn architecture, tea ceremonies, modern dining and a world-class circus beneath a bamboo dome. By day, browse traditional crafts and boutique stores; at night, lantern-lit boats drift along the Thu Bon River. A thriving port between the 16th and 18th centuries, trading silk, spices and ceramics with China and Japan, Hoi An faded during the colonial era, yet its saffron-hued shophouses and Chinese assembly halls are remarkably well preserved. Though mass tourism often leaves its UNESCO-listed Old Town overcrowded, some of the best new spots lie beyond it, where cafes and restaurants are springing up beside quiet rice paddies. April is especially agreeable: At night there’s a breeze, the sea is inviting, and the monsoon rains have yet to arrive.
