Fire Destroys Historic Lodge on Grand Canyon’s North Rim

This fire is on Bureau of Land Management lands and isn’t located in the Grand Canyon. I hope that they can get this fire under control quickly.

To add to the helpful info above, this from the NPS website:

This is the website you should use if planning to visit the North Rim in the very near future.
Jacob Lake is a Plan B location for people who couldn't book a spot at the North Rim.

There are other fires at both the North and South rims of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park that has required evacuation.

We've hiked both of these parks and hope all are safe and damage is minimal!

Valerie, good on YOU for raising the red flag!
Unfortunate situation in ANY case but I feel the disappointment of folks who'd landed hard-to-get reservations/permits for lodge, campgrounds or backcountry.

If you want to see a 'different' kind of canyon wall/rock type and not be crowded, check it out. ( At least in Sept it wasn't

Edit--Oops.... need more coffee

Yep, it's a completely different type of rock wall/canyon than the Grand Canyon innit, Joe? :O)

That is sad.

My 1st view of the Grand Canyon was from there. An unforgettable experience.

Good thing they had called for the evacuation.

Oh that's devastating news. We camped there 10 years ago; had a wonderful lunch with a rimside table at the Lodge, and enjoyed the sunset from the beautiful patio. They had a statue of Brighty the mule with his nose burnished bright by pets. It's one of our favorite camping memories.

We stayed in one of the cabins 31 years ago. I'm sad they couldn't save these historic buildings.

I haven’t been to the Grand Canyon yet, but I’m sad to learn that historic lodge has been lost.

We stayed in one of the Frontier cabins on the North Rim for 3 nights some years ago. Can't believe the historic lodge, with its wonderful terrace, Visitor Center and probably most of the cabins are gone! So, so sad. :O(

Edited to add:
Jacob Lake Inn and Kaibab Lodge both look to have survived and are acting as staging or support bases for firefighters. The NPS site for the park indicates that the chlorine gas problem has shut down Phantom Ranch and South Kaibab trail as well as the North Rim and North Kaibab trail.

As well as the links posters above have provided, fans of the National Parks might want to check into the excellent independent "National Parks Traveler" website for additional news as it happens?

Our family stayed there many years ago and we have incredibly fond memories from that trip. We loved the North Rim Lodge and the cabins. So quiet compared to the South Rim. This is such a sad loss of a truly beautiful, magical, and historic place.

Oh my gosh! I am heartbroken over this! We were going to be there on Sept 7. to celebrate our 51st wedding anniversary. We love the North Rim, having been there a few years ago and couldn't wait to go back. Such a beautiful, calm, spiritual place. So thankful everybody had been evacuated. Thanks to you all for the updates.
