Favorite Hikes in Maui

I have the Hawaii Revealed book and access to AllTrails. I'm looking for personal recommendations for 2-3 hour easy to moderate level hikes in Maui. I do have ideas for snorkeling, but if folks have recs for a place that was really special, feel free to add.

Until very recently my wife's family had a Maui condo, so have spent a lot of time. Pour one out for no more free stays on Keawakapoo beach :(

I've done basically all the hikes on Maui. IMO hiking in Hawaii in general kind of sucks, Maui included. Bad trails, weird destinations. Because so much private property + apathetic state infrastructure.

There's no question that up in the volcano NP is the best hiking on the island. So if you are going up, wrap a hike into your visit. Sliding Sands is lovely and convenient.

Waihe'e Ridge out of the rest. People really do seem to love it but I'm lukewarm. Probably spoiled by living in the PNW, aka hiking paradise. Rain makes it a slippy mess (a trekking pole or two is nice). Bit of an uphill grind but not super long until you get some views. You don't have do the whole thing.

Or for easier you can do a bunch of the shorter trail in the Iao Valley SP. Busy but decent trails and lovely scenic.

If you are staying out toward Kapalua the link below outline nicely the local area trails. All essentially informal, all essentially tolerated by private property owners. But if you want to swing your legs a bit they work.

Have fun! Maui is magic :)

We like to do the short hike out to the Dragons Teeth out by Kapalua and the big Ritz Carlton Resort. Follow the info in the book to understand the signage. Go early to snag one of the parking spaces in the turnout.

Sticking with the Kapalua jag, Kapalua itself is a really pretty and pleasant place to take a long walk. Gorgeous coastal trail can be looped with a walk through resort's more inland walking trails. Probably get 3-4 miles out of it.

Upcountry is wonderful, Edenic climate, beautiful farms, flora and fauna.

Kula Lodge is an old school charming spot to get a slightly overpriced but lovely country club sort of lunch. Before my wife's grandparents passed that's where they would take us if we met them on the island. Pretty gardens too. Keep an eye open for the super-size avocado trees in the parking area.

I lived on Maui for 3 years. My favorite hikes are Pipiwai hike (near Hana) or bamboo hike as we called it and the other hike I love is in Iao valley. You can use Alltrails to find.

Oh I thought of something else. Check out the Nature Conservancy website. They lead hikes to some off the beaten path places and actually some of their hikes you can’t do without them guiding you. And they are free!
If you don’t mind a hefty fee-Hike Maui also leads hikes.
