Extended Winter Stay in Mexico

We’re interested in planning for a one-month stay. We’ve traveled quite a lot in Europe and Southeast Asia but we haven’t traveled in Mexico. We know that we’d like to spend time in Mexico City and places where we could spend a week or so at a time.

We’d like to plan for cities that are well-connected and not difficult to travel to. We like art, architecture, culture, and food. We prefer cities and are not especially interested in beach or resort towns but wouldn’t necessarily rule them out.

Thanks for any suggestions!

One of the posters on this forum has recommended San Miguel de Allende, which has also been recommended to me by friends who have lived in Mexico. It’s on my list!

I can offer you a lot of suggestions. I'm assuming you're thinking of four cities, including CDMX, about a week in each.

Would you want to rent a car and drive yourselves? Or take buses/coaches? Or fly? Mexico has an excellent network of high-quality private coach companies, so if you want to travel by land, that's a good way to go. But Mexico is much bigger than many people realize, and distances can be quite long, so flying is also a good option.

Besides CDMX, you should hit Guadalajara, and Guanajuato. You could easily do those three by bus. The fourth city I'd recommend is Oaxaca, you'll want to fly there. I think those four cities will give you a great chance to experience Mexican culture and gastronomy and see some really great colonial architecture. Plus, from Guanajuato you can make an easy day trip by bus to San Miguel de Allende, a really charming city (and a UNESCO World Heritage Site). And from Guadalajara, you can bus down to the Lake Chapala area and visit us immigrants. Ajijic, where I live, and the surrounding towns on the shore of Lake Chapala, are home to the largest expat community in the country.

I have to say, though, that spending a week will require you to be creative about filling your time. There are plenty of things to see in each city, enough to easily fill a few days, but a week would be a long time to spend in Guanajuato for sure

Let me know if you have any other questions or need different suggestions.

Thank you! I’ve looked at your blog Lane and appreciate your input. We’ll do some more research and then we will probably have some more specific questions. We’re laid back travelers so we might be o.k. with something more low key.

When we lived in the Pacific Northwest we spent much of every winter in San Miguel de Allende (SMA) - our longest stay was for 3 months. Beautiful weather, friendly people, lots to see and do, and convenient via the local buses (which I highly recommend versus driving yourselves) to the nearby towns of Dolores Hidalgo, Queretero, and Guanajuato - all of which are worth a visit. There's a large American/Canadian expat community there headquartered at the local biblioteca, which publishes a weekly newspaper called "Atencion San Miguel" that reports all of the goings on in the city and the region that might be of interest. They offer a host of day trips and tours around the area as well. You can probably find an electronic version of the paper online.
Didn't expect to like Mexico City as much as we did. It's beautiful with some world class museums and parks - easily worth a week of your time.
The recommendations by the previous posters are all excellent choices - you can't go wrong with any of them.
For a unique excursion book a day trip from either SMA or Mexico City to the Butterfly Sanctuary in Michoacan ... about 1.5 hrs. from either city as I recall. It's the end point and wintering over destination for millions of the Monarchs that make their annual migration from northern climes. The sight of them clinging to the trees in the mountain park and then taking flight once the sun warms them up is an experience not to be missed. My wife still talks about that one.

Thanks Robert! The Butterfly Sanctuary sounds like a unique experience - hoping that the timing might work out for us.

We’ve heard many good things about San Miguel but more recently some mixed reviews - we’re wondering if it’s become too over-touristed?
