Egypt Tour Guide Recommendations

Thought I’d start this thread for anyone to post their Egypt tour guide recommendations.

If anyone is looking for a university educated Egyptologist guide, then I highly recommend Mohamed Zaki who formerly worked in archaeological restoration and has years of experience as a guide for both groups and individuals. We had initially considered going with a tour group and assumed an armed guard would be needed, but after speaking with others who had recently been, we chose Mr. Zaki who’s connected with Scaramouche Tours and was recommended by another poster on the Rick Steves forums. Unlike the assumptions many make about Egypt, not once did we feel unsafe anywhere and all the major tourist sites and hotels have security and armed guards. Plus having our own private guide, private van, and driver allowed us to avoid the large tour buses and tweak our itinerary on the go if needed, all for a price that was less expensive than most group tours I found.

My wife and I took a two week tour with Mr. Zaki throughout Egypt and his wealth of knowledge was appreciated. He is a Luxor native and expert in many aspects of both upper and lower Egypt, including all of the commonly visited modern and ancient sites, and this significantly enhanced our own enjoyment of learning about his beautiful country. His professionalism and ability to coordinate the logistics of a trip is second to none and kept our travel schedule running smoothly without a hitch. He has a Facebook presence with contact info. I’d be happy to be a reference for any questions. Mr. Zaki would be a great addition to the Rick Steves team if they ever branched into Egypt. His What’s App number is +20 100 249 6991 and his email is [email protected].

Certainly, most foreigners should not attempt to travel in Egypt without a guide and driver (if nothing more than to decrease the hassle factor), but realize it can easily be done safely and privately without having to go on a large group tour. Look forward to returning to Egypt!

Thanks for the info. I've been collecting Egypt info as I have a feeling that someday for graduation when we give each of our kids a place to go our daughter will pick Egypt.

I would advise you to consider taking a tour of Egypt instead of going with a local guide.

All tours are guarded by armed guards since the terror attack in the late 90s.

We found a very affordable tour with Gate 1, a two week tour in top hotels with two 3 day Nile cruises each, airfare included from NYC for less than $3500 pp.

Our guide was an Egyptologist, Archeologist who left the Archeological Museum to lead tours as it paid him so much more. He was outstanding and we have communicated since the trip, the last one before COVID struck. We went to Egypt with Odysseys Unlimited.
Yes,tourist groups from the USA and two other countries are accompanied by Egyptian guards. They were unobtrusive and helpful in other ways. They would get rid of the touts selling souvenirs and junk. In Cairo they wore business suits, less formally dressed on the boats. All polite young men.

Hello -

In July 2019 (yep - in the summer) we took an amazing Egyptian trip with Memphis Tours. We had private guides and drivers the entire time (no armed guards - we never once felt unsafe in Egypt). We toured Cairo, Giza, Memphis, Luxor, and Alexandria. It was a trip of a lifetime, and the guides and drivers and food were fantastic. They even flew us to Luxor and back. The price for the week (not including lodgings, but including everything else), for my husband and myself was extremely reasonable. I don't know how they have fared in the last three years, but when we took this trip in 2019, it was great from start to finish.

I used GoLux Tours after finding them here and they did a great job for us! Thanks to those who recommend them.
