My wife and I will be going to Egypt in May. Since Rick Steves is our usual go-to travel guide/advice site, but only seem to have videos on Egypt, can anyone recommend a good alternative guide book?
Rick Steve’s’ books are for Europe. For Egypt in January 2020, we used DK Eyewitness’ and Fodors’ EGYPT. Enjoy every minute of your time in Egypt!
The Moon guide to Egypt is not bad.
Are you on a tour? If not, I like Bradt Guides for slightly off the standard path areas.
I'm going to Egypt and Istanbul In June, and bought the Lonely Planet books.
Just a note for anyone else interested in guidebooks -
I have the most recent edition (2021) of the Lonely Planet guidebook for Egypt. It has been very helpful but I have encountered issues of which others should be aware and check for their own purposes:
After researching to confirm attraction entry fees, I can say that most have substantially increased in real life, since publication. For example, Temple Abu Simbel is listed at LE160 in the guidebook. Presently https://egymonuments.com lists the admission ticket for LE260 (a poster from another forum mentioned that they paid LE275 earlier this month, April 2023) but in June 2023 the price increases again for foreigner admission - to LE400.
Hours of operation are not necessarily correct anymore. Many have expanded but some have shortened.
Some attractions that exist are not listed. (This is to be expected of course). Specifically, I noticed that the missing include the Royal Jewellery Museum in Alexandria and all zoos (including the African Safari Park between Cairo and Alexandria).
Some mentioned attractions are not currently open. For example: the Imhotep Museum in Saqqara - though it may be near reopening soon.
Mersa Matruh airport (MUH) has closed indefinitely so flight is no longer a valid method of travel to/from that location. This was important to us when considering our Siwa Oasis visit. "No new flights for now" was confirmed to me today by EgyptAir and MUH is not even available to select on AirCairo's website.
