I am in the earliest stages of planning a roadtrip to Arkansas. I always do well with advice on this forum.
Any advice on what to see and what to skip? Hot Springs? National Or State Parks? Nice places for day hiking or kayaking? Hotels? Thanks!
Fayetteville is a fun college town. If you have any interest in art the Crystal Bridges museum in Bentonville nearby, is world class. A beautiful building and natural setting too. Walton family money (Walmart) is why it’s in that town. I haven’t been anywhere else in Arkansas.
My family visited Petit Jean State Park on a summer camping trip, and even though that was eons ago, I recall that it was quite scenic. As an adult looking it up now, it seems there's significant CCC infrastructure in the park. I'm sure someone who's been there recently or who knows the history better will weigh in. Happy trip planning!
Another vote for Bentonville ane the Crystal Bridges Museum. We also enjoyed our time in Little Rock, visiting The Clinton Presidential Library and the Little Rock National Museum across from the Little Rock Highschool.
Thanks for the responses! I am collating a list. Then, I will use YouTube and other sources for pruning and planning a trip.
white water canoeing in the north, in the Ozark mountains.
Stan,
That sounds cool! Or, kayaking! Do you know of a specific site or River?
My son and his fiancé live about 45 minutes north of Little Rock. Last year they took me to Petit Jean State Park. It was so pretty and quite a few hiking trails. Hot Springs is also nice but keep in mind it is touristy. We've also rented an Airbnb on the White River for trout fishing and a pontoon boat for the lake. I believe it was near Norfork. Arkansas is beautiful! Enjoy your trip.
Sun-baked, the White River and the Buffalo River (national park) are canoeing destinations. Don't know about kayaking. More good rivers in south Missouri.
Eureka Springs is a big tourist destination for crafts and old-timey stuff. And a passion play if that's your thing.

Little Rock - Clinton Library, trolley tour
Crater of Diamonds State Park - dig for diamonds
You guys are most helpful.
Any menu items that are uniquely Arkansas?
I also heard about the “haunted” crescent hotel. Sometimes, tourist cliches can be fun - especially with a cold, local brew.
We stayed at Enchanted Treehouses in Eureka Springs. We chose the Snow White treehouse, and it was so cute! I just looked at the map for the name of the brewery across the holler, but it looks like might have closed:( The Spring on Main is a good restaurant in downtown Eureka Springs. We hiked around Black Bass Lake and all around the little town.
A local here…
Crystal Bridges in Bentonville is a must. Don’t miss also all the beautiful walking trails all around the museum and into the historic downtown.
Louise at Thaden Field-
Really awesome restaurant at Bentonville Airport. Also connected by a trail through a marsh to Bentonville Brewery. Great outdoor, family friendly place to grab a craft brew and food truck grub.
Hot Springs and Eureka have slightly similar vibes. I prefer Hot Springs with the history and national park bathhouses. Just do not stay at the Arlington Hotel. It is historic but really run down. If you are in town during horse racing season Oak Lawn is really fun.
Eureka has a more eclectic, rebel vibe. Think lots of hot sauces with inappropriate words on them, etc.
I forgot to mention if you are into mountain biking. NW Arkansas is like a hub for that.
I am thinking of driving to Arkansas. Start around Little Rock. Then, travel north along the north border over to Bentonville/Fayetteville. Then, loop south and central to Hot Springs. See Ouachita Park. Finally, cruise back home. Book hotels on the fly (day before). Travel loose.
Any good casual dining recommendations? Any unique-to-Arkansas food?
Hot Springs NP is VERY peculiar. It's a row of historic bathhouses and then a large forested hill or 2 just like a county park. Just don't go expecting a typical national park experience.
Arkansas food speciality? Fried dill pickles.
The pickles are going on the list.
Thanks Toby for that insight. Sounds more like a national monument than a nature preserve.
It’s near Ouachita park though, isn’t it?
hey hey Sun-Baked in Florida
years ago we went to eureka springs was really nice but i'm sure lots of changes plus a tourist town

It’s not a big state, so can’t be far.
Hot Springs NP is more like an historic park or a battlefield park.
