Just started looking at Egypt and Egypt/Jordan tours. For the Egypt part, I definitely want a tour but I also read a comment that it's not necessary for Jordan. What's your thoughts?
Just got back from our Egypt tour. While we didn't do the post tour Jordan extention, a majority of our fellow travellers did. The tour company makes it all so easy. They arrange your airfare to Jordan. Your accommodations, transportation, and entrance fees are taken care of. You have an experienced tour guide to manage logistics as well as provide info and insight into the places you go. And the guide is fluent in Arabic and knows the local culture.
But if the itinerary isn't what you want or if none of these things are a requirement for you, then feel free to make all your own arrangements
When I went to Jordan for 8 days in 2022 as a solo female traveler, it was easy to make my own arrangements. I did hire a driver, because it was so affordable and it added a lot to my trip. I wasn’t interested in driving myself or taking a tour. It just depends on your preferences.
We visited in 2019 and didn't use a guide. We rented a car and drove ourselves and found it all quite straightforward.
It is best to do group tours for Middle East countries. Jordan is one of the best in the area to visit, but for all around security it is best.
Also, group tours take care of all the details and you generally get to see more on a group tour.
Gate 1 Travel has tours of Jordan.
If you're comfortable driving, Jordan is very easy to do on your own. I lived in Amman for four years and it's an extremely safe country. There are fewer touts than you will get in Egypt, especially now that they've clamped down on them in Petra. I disagree that it's best to do a group tour in the middle east; I think it really depends on the country.
If you travel independently, definitely hire a guide for Petra so you have a better experience. They have official guides at the front. I think whether to do a group tour or on your own will really come down to how comfortable you are with driving. Don't drive in Amman, but it's easy outside the city, albeit more "assertive" than you'll be used to. You can also hire drivers, but I'm guessing that's more expensive and I don't know how you'd find one from overseas.
