Crossing border Palestine into Jordan

We'll be touring in Petra in April. We need to cross into Jordan to meet our Petra tour at the Alinbi border crossing. We need advice on transportation from Tel Aviv and how to cross the border. We are travelling on US passports.

Google transfers from Tel Aviv to Allenby Briidge. (Note spelling) Lots of info will come up. Ask your tour leader about crossing the border.

You must get your Jordanian visas before you leave the U.S. Tourist visas are not issued by Jordan at the Allenby crossing. You will be crossing from Israel into Jordan. My educated guess is that you'll have to go to East Jerusalem and get transportation there to the border. The best way to Jerusalem is by bus to the Central Bus Station in Jerusalem. From there you can take the light rail or a taxi to East Jerusalem to the Damascus Gate bus depot and then get a sherut (shared taxi) to the border. If you're going in the morning, be sure to allow plenty of time for rush hour traffic leaving Tel Aviv, entering and getting through Jerusalem. Also, the border crossing can be very busy and while you might get through in 15-20 minutes, it could also be a couple of hours. Without traffic delays, it's about 1 hour by bus from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, another 10-20 minutes to Damascus Gate, then another 45 minute drive to the border, add waiting time for transfers.

BTW, you'll have to pay a departure tax when you leave Israel. Last I heard, it was NIS 105 per person.

Thank you both for your comments. It's too late to get a visa in the US before we travel in April. I think we'll have to re-arrange our plans to another border crossing. Any thoughts on transportation to Eilat crossing?

Our small tour group crossed at Eliat. We waited in the vehicle while our guide/driver got the visas. Once in Jordan, a Jordanian driver took over the vehicle and our Israeli guide became guide only, the law in Jordan it seems. I remember the big billboard size sign as we entered Jordanian territory. It listed all the things visitors MUST NOT DO and then at the bottom it said "Have a nice visit". Which we did. We returned to Israel via Allenby.
