Costa Rica or Belize in August

Hello! We are planning a trip in August and, for a variety of reasons, have begun considering non-European destinations. The three tween/teenagers have suggested Costa Rica or Belize. (Also- we can fly there on Alaska Air with companion tickets.)

What advice do you have for a family trip (2 adults, kids ages 12, 14, 16) at this time?
Which destination would be better, for a mix of outdoor adventure and some relaxing on the beach?
Thanks for your help!

I myself thought about these two destinations. In August, there is some chance of hurricanes around Belize. I'd vote for Costa Rica for Aug and save Belize for another time.

That is hurricane season in the Carribbean, which may hit Belize, but will still impact both countries....at least Costa Rica's Carribbean Coast. Heavy rains and occasional flooding can happen. Given the state of the roads and hilly/mountainous region, you want to decide on your location after adequate reseach. The northwest of the country is the best location for that time. Not dry, but less rainfall. If you have visions of canopy walks, zip lines and volcano views, you might have less chance. Arenal and Monte Verde are at upper altitudes and cloud forest...which becomes rain forest at certain times of the year. Of course, people fgo all year around, but just adjust expectations. As it is 'green season' crowds and costs will be lower, and availability higher.
