I have been looking at a dated guidebook for the Nicoya Peninsula for suggestions on a stay at a beach nearest to Liberia airport. For those of you familiar, would you suggest Playa del Coco or Playa Hermosa or somewhere else? I will be relying on local transport- taxi, bus, or shuttle. Not necessarily looking for a party atmosphere. Hopefully, we will be able to enjoy the beach since we are going in August (rainy season). Welcome all suggestions.

Both Coco and Hermosa are small communities but I would choose Hermosa. Also consider Playa Tamarindo which has more hotel and restaurant options. It is about 3 times further but reachable by local transport. If you choose Hermosa I recommend Ginger Restaurant for great dining.

Thanks for the restaurant recommendation- we might check it out because I have booked our accommodations in Playa Hermosa. It appeared that the beach in Hermosa was a better swimming beach than Playa Coco.

Hi Linda,
We stayed in Playa Hermosa for 4 nights, but it was about 6 years ago. If you're looking for quiet, this is a good area. There is not too much around, at least where we stayed. We loved it, and loved our stay at La Gaviota Tropical which was brand new at the time and was exactly what is pictured on their website. They have a restaurant on site called Roberto's. We had breakfast (included with our accommodations) and lunch there which we enjoyed and also went to Ginger twice during our stay.
I saw some of the most beautiful sunsets there than I have anywhere.
Enjoy - the people are wonderful!
