I've been sufficiently enthusiastic about visiting Mexico City, I've unintentionally motivated our friends to visit there, too. They live in a very small community in New Mexico - El Paso being their nearest airport. There are currently no direct flights from El Paso to Mexico City - however - 26 miles away in Ciudad Juarez, their airport offers numerous direct flights to CDMX. This is an esoteric question, but does anyone have experience leaving a vehicle in the Ciudad Juarez Airport parking lot for a week?
No experience, but reading this , the first thought that came to mind was that a car with US plates would be all but a neon sign inviting bad things to happen ( unless they are driving a 73 Pinto in which case it may be left untouched).
I would definitely check with my insurance agent about the comprehensive coverage being in force while its parked there.
Buena idea y buen pensamIento mi amigo.
Soprendentemente, Autotrader enumera muchos Pintos de 1973 la mayoria con un precio del duble de lo que vali mi Hyundai Sonata 2013.
No personal experience with that (I've "parked" all over Mexico, though never left my vehicle unattended for more than a day).
Your US auto insurance policy is not valid in Mexico. If you want to drive into Mexico, you need to buy Mexican insurance, before you cross the border. The cost for basic coverage would not be prohibitive, and it's not hard to get. But I'm not sure your plan to drive across, park your car, and leave it there for a week is entirely practical.
If you really want to fly from Juarez, you might see if you can find a service that would pick you up in El Paso, take you across the border and drop you at the airport. Of course, then you have to worry about what happens to your car while parked in El Paso, but I'm sure that can also be found. Check for a service that transfers passengers from El Paso's airport to Ciudad Juarez's, I would not be surprised if there was one.
Otro consejo valioso.
I have relatives in South Texas and they say that Mexico's border areas next to Texas are a NO GO.
Personally, I would NO to the Juarez.
I'm not from the area obviously, but security issues in Mexico tend to be localized (gang turf issues), and the situation across the south Texas border in Tamaulipas (which is apparently very bad indeed) might not be the same as in Cd Juarez, Chihuaha.
Perhaps inquire about transfer services? If they don't exist, that will probably say something about the situation 😅
I love CDMX, or ‘el DF’! Worth any effort to make a trip there!
I have bi-national cousins in the Rio Grande Valley, and go back and forth to homes in Morelos. I recall them telling me they park on the US side, in Brownsville TX, walk across the border to Matamoros, MX, and take a cab to the airport.
Scudder, it might work well for going from the US to Mexico, but what about the other direction?
We didn’t use the Ciudad Juarez airport but did visit the city. We drove to El Paso, left our car in a parking lot and walked across the bridge to Ciudad Juarez where we then took a taxi to our hotel. We didn’t want the hassle of getting Mexican auto insurance or possibility of auto theft.
geovagriffith- They just reverse the plan going from Mexico to the US. That’s actually where the time-saving payoff is—walking saves them from waiting in the long lines that cars face entering the US from Mex.
