Charleston, SC B&B or Inn

My husband and I are in the initial stages of planning a 4 night getaway to Charleston. We prefer to stay at a more intimate, romantic location for this trip. A B&B or inn is what we were thinking, but a hotel would be fine too. I have looked for hours at the choices available in Charleston. It seems I can't find the perfect fit. I would prefer not to pay $400/night for a room, but it seems that is the normal price for the nicer inns. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions based on places they have stayed and enjoyed?

Quite a bit depends on when you are planning to visit. We have great friends in SC that go to Charleston frequently. The last time we stayed there, we stayed in Folly Beach and it was a short drive into Charleston and the house was wonderful.

Thanks for your suggestion Mother Duck. We are planning on going in November.

I will reach out to my friends and see what B & B's they recommend in Charleston. I'm sure they are not paying those rates in early November,.

Just curious as to what website you are using for your search?

Try the Fulton Lane Inn. http://www.fultonlaneinn.com/
This is our favorite place to stay in Charleston - great location, charming rooms, and very helpful staff. Their deluxe king rooms should be well below you budget that time of year. Save the money and use it to eat at Husk, Fig, and absolutely be sure to eat at McCrady's http://mccradysrestaurant.com/ -- Sean Brock's flagship restaurant.

We have stayed at the Harbourview Inn all three times we've gone there. It is a bit pricier, but they run specials sometimes. It includes a lovely breakfast with the best pastries I've ever had, and the location is perfect. We walked you everything from there. We found that most of the places to stay right in town were in the same price range. Have a great trip! That's one of my favorite cities!

$400/night is really excessive for November, that is really off-season unless you're going around Thanksgiving time. Charleston lodging prices have really gotten out of control in the past few years, but Barksdale House Inn is reasonable (by Charleston standards) and even has free parking, which is unheard of anywhere in the center. It's also walkable to everything and has wonderful reviews.

By the way, consider Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, Folly Beach, and surrounding communities to get better hotel rates. It's really not a big deal at all to drive in, I've done it multiple times. The B & Bs in Charleston are really for folks who are not at all price sensitive or are shooting for a romantic experience (nothing wrong with that, by the way), BUT outside of the old city, you'll find much more reasonable rates. I've used www.hotwire.com and www.booking.com to get hotel rooms in Charleston and surrounding areas, and was quite pleased with the result. The hotel savings made for some really amazing meals.

Thanks everyone so far for your wonderful responses. We are in fact going the week of Thanksgiving. My husband is a teacher, so we are sometimes limited on available dates, unfortunately. Mother Duck, I have done everything from a Google search to TripAdvisor to BedandBreakfast.com to reading travel articles written on Charleston for suggestions.

Not much ambience, but there is a Doubletree downtown and an Embassy Suites on Meeting Street. And you could see what prices are like at the beaches(Folly, Isle of Palms) that time of year.

I agree with the recommendation of Fulton Lane B&B. They also have the one next door, Kings Courtyard Inn and we have stayed there often. Breakfast is served in their courtyard for both Inns and they also do a 5 pm wine and cheese hour. KC rooms are furnished with period pieces, oriental rugs, etc. Both are located on King St and you cannot find a better location in Charleston.

I just looked on booking.com and used arrival on Nov 22 with a departure of Nov 26 (4 night stay). Several hotels and inns were available within the historic area for less than $400 per night. Might not be exactly what you are looking for but it appears there are some options.

Also checked AirBnB and several things showed up that looked good.

Good luck!

My group of college friends stayed at the King Charles Inn (a hotel). One person had stayed there previously and recommended it. Everyone loved the hotel. Great location, too.

I suggest HarbourView Inn for you. you will find everything that you need because
this property on the harbor is steps from City Market, Rainbow Row, and the Battery. Rooms have warm wood tones as well as four-poster beds, custom-made armoires, original artwork, and oversized baths. Historic wing rooms include 14-foot ceilings, an original brick wall from the 1830s, large plantation shutters, and ceiling fans to create a historic ambiance. "Words can’t describe the level of excellence you experience here. Staff nailed every detail of your trip to make it one of the most memorable ever." While there is no restaurant on-site, complimentary snacks and flavored iced teas are available in the front lobby all day.

We stayed at the Elliott House in Dec 2016. It is a B&B, will certainly fit into your budget, and is in a fantastic location. We walked to everything except the ferry to Fort Sumter. Husk and Poogans's Porch (restaurants) are just a few doors down.

I may be a bit late with this but I have been to Charleston many times and I really like the Barksdale House Inn. http://www.barksdalehouse.com/

I think their prices are reasonable for what you get there. It's just on the edge of the historic/tourist area so the prices are reasonable but it's a lovely place and the breakfast is pretty good with a variety of pastries, breakfast meats, eggs, grits, fruit, etc. It varies a bit daily and probably by season. It may be on the edge but it's a good neighborhood and everything is still in walking distance.

I've stayed there at least 5 times and I've never been let down.

On an unrelated note, make sure to visit Kaminskys. It is a wine and dessert bar and they have the most scrumptious cakes there. You can buy them by the slice. One of my favorite memories of Charleston!
