Not sure what route you are taking, but I have read that Guatemala, Honduras and San Salvador are countries with some of the highest crime rates in the world. The drug cartels a tearing up those countries. I assume that you mean San Jose, Costa Rica, so you will likely pass through at least two of those countries.
Perhaps you should hire off duty police with weapons to guard you. I remember reading about a motorcyclist that was driving down the Pan American highway and in Columbia was kidnapped by criminals from a drug cartel. He nearly died spending many months incarcerated, beaten and abused.
Perhaps I am wrong. I hope so, but research what actual conditions are before you go.
