Carefree Highway

When you saw that title, what, if anything sprang to mind?. For many Canadians, or fans of Gordon Lightfoot, it would be the song of the same name. I was today years old when I found out it was the name of a real highway, north of Phoenix Arizona. My daughter is there right now and sent a photo of the highway sign. According to legend, Gordon was driving from Phoenix to .... somewhere, and saw the sign. Thought it would make a good song title. And now I have an earworm stuck in my head.

Your trivia for the day.

I have some friends who live in the town of Carefree, AZ. It was a master planned community conceived in 1955. IMO the town predates any highway "title". However, it can be a happy drive if one so wishes.

CJean, years of boating springs to mind. Carefree Hwy is the exit off of I-17 to head west on SR74 to Lake Pleasant and on to Wickenburg. It’s a 4 lane then 2 lane road, through the desert, but occasionally you’ll see wild burros roaming about. Eastward it leads to the community of Carefree. From there you head northeast to Bartlett Lake or loop around west to the town of Cave Creek with its western themed restaurants and bars.

Hope your daughter is having fun. It’s kind of warm (106*) and muggy with the monsoons building up. Let her know that the Western Museum in Wickenburg is worth a visit.
If she’s in Phoenix, the Heard Museum is excellent (Native American artifacts and history). Also Hall of Flames, a fire truck museum, near the Botanical Gardens.

I'll pass that on Horsewoofie. She has visited Phoenix many times as it is home to her BFFs extended family. Unfortunately this trip is for a Memorial service for the family patriarch.
