Canadian Rupert Rocket/Skeena train trip

I am in the planning stages of a trip in the western part of Canada for next year (June?). I live in North Carolina and plan to fly to Edmonton and then drive/train to Jasper. Spend a day there and then take the train to Prince Rupert with an overnight in Prince George. I’m thinking a day in Prince Rupert and then BC Ferry to Port Hardy, Vancouver Island. Maybe a day there? Then fly to Vancouver and spend a day or so there and fly back to NC. Any thoughts on this trip? I am thinking about a week for the trip. TIA!

We did a wonderful bus tour for four days of the Canadian Rockies from Vancouver a few years ago.

We visited Jasper, Lake Louise and Banff. I think you could see what we did in three days. It is worth spending more than one day.
When in Vancouver, we did visit Victoria and Buchert Gardens. We spent a full day there. The Gardens were amazing.

I think you are trying to cover a lot of ground in a week. I would want to look more into some reviews on the train and the likelihood of it all being on time. Passenger trains in Canada usually have to wait for freight, so can be delayed I believe.

June will be nice with long evenings that far north, but be prepared for potentially cool weather.

Personally this feels like a two week trip to me. Vancouver Island alone could have been a week, Ive spent 5 nights in Jasper and Vancouver has a lot to see too. As well you will probably want to spend your first night in Edmonton as Jasper is a 5 hour drive.

You've chosen a truly special route, the Skeena line, and the stretch between Jasper and Prince Rupert is among Canada's most scenic. I guide groups through the Rockies every season, and that combination of train travel and local exploration offers a great mix of comfort and adventure.

If time allows, consider spending at least two nights in Jasper. It's not just about the town; the surrounding area (Maligne Lake, Edith Cavell Meadows, and Valley of the Five Lakes) gives you a real sense of what the Canadian Rockies are about. The same goes for Banff and Canmore if you decide to continue south; they offer some of Alberta's best day hikes and viewpoints.

June is an excellent choice: trails are mostly clear, wildlife is active, and daylight lasts well into the evening.

I work with Rocky Mountain Adventure Tours.
A small guiding company based in Alberta focuses on customized hiking and sightseeing experiences around Banff, Canmore, and Jasper. Even if you're exploring independently, our site has practical advice and route ideas that might help your planning.

Have an incredible trip; the landscapes along your route are some of the most unforgettable in the country.
