Buying Jewlery in Aruba

First …. Is gem jewelry les expensive in Aruba than US? What stones are a good value?
And is there a reputable jewelry store in Aruba?

Do you know the real thing from a fake? Can you tell a good quality gem from one riddled with flaws? Are you willing to take the word of an unknown salesman, with no recourse if you get home and find out from your appraiser that your bargain gems are no bargain at all?

I have done business with my jeweler for 35+ years. He gave me what I consider to be a terrific piece of advice many years ago:
When you purchase an item of jewelry during your travels, it is best to consider it from this mindset:

You are purchasing a piece that will provide you with a beautiful memory of your trip. You have to be comfortable with the amount of money that you have spent, well knowing that It may or not be authentic, and you may or not have been conned. Consider it as a souvenir of sorts, and don't be angry if you arrive home to find out that your purchase was not a high quality gem. That advice has served me well throughout our travels.

I was reluctant to post as I’ve only had limited experience, but…We purchased a very expensive piece of jewelry in what I’d call the preeminent hotel shop in Victoria BC only to have it fall apart within a week. When we contacted them they blew us off faster than a bowl of hot soup. No recourse. Live and learn and shop at trusted, reputable dealers at home was my take away.

I don't know if jewelry is less expensive there or not, but I do recommend visiting Kay's Jewelery (NOT to be confused with the mediocre Kay's in the US). My mom and I had a great experience and found their prices to be fair, if not good. We both left with a little bling for our wrists and they promptly mailed the appraisal paperwork. If you go onto any Aruba-specific travel site or FB groups, you will see that they are recommended quite a bit.
