Boston to Quebec City

Hello! Driving from Boston to Quebec City in late September - we will break up the drive with a night’s stay somewhere.
I would love some feedback on the most scenic route to take, and, a favorite place to spend the overnight, thanks! Edit: I think we may want to drive to Quebec City via Vermont, or some slightly western route, as we will go through Maine en route to Bar Harbor after Quebec City for the latter part of the trip.

Well, if it were me, I would take the route heading up 295 that follows the coastline and then goes up into Maine. But that's because I love Maine and would do anything to drive through there. You could always stop in Augusta for the night, which is a very charming city.

Thanks for that reply! For this trip, we are going to head to Bar Harbor after Quebec City. I’m SO looking forward to driving through Maine on the back part of the trip!

Nothing wrong taking I93 through New Hampshire, then to I91 then up to Q.C.. You'll go through Manchester, Concord and White Mountains all while bypassing Montreal.

Thanks, Bob, that route looks good. Would you recommend St Johnsbury as a picturesque place for an overnight?

NebraskaMiles,
Just curious. If you are coming from Nebraska and getting a rental car in Boston, be sure to verify it will be okay to take it into Canada. There could be some restrictions on that with a rental.

I wouldn't say St. J is especially scenic but it does has some charm and some decent restaurants. Depending on what time of day you get there you may not see anything. You are also traveling during foliage season so accomodations mght be an issue.

I agree with the route-I93 to I91 for the fastest route. To get more of a westerly route you would either need to travel west in MA to I91 to travel the length of the state of VT OR get on I89 in Concord NH to cross over to VT mid-state to hook up with I91. Any route will be scenic.

Vermont’s Route 100 is known as “Vermont’s Main Street.”

It is the scenic route that passes through iconic towns and countryside. I first heard about it from a friend who lived in Vermont. Of course, it takes a bit longer to drive than the interstate highway. However, you’ll see much more of Vermont on Route 100 than you will from the highways.
