Boston Lodging

Planning to walk the historic center of Boston with my husband, first time to the city. Will need lodging on Oct. 14, 15, 16, that won’t break the bank nor the feet. Any suggestions?

When we went to Boston, we stayed at the Hampton Inn in Revere. Their rates were reasonable and they had complimentary shuttle service into different places in Boston.

Boston is shockingly expensive. My favorite area is Copley Square but I think hotels in this area will be very expensive.

You are also coming in when the leaves are changing color and that makes Boston even more expensive.

There is a hotel called Revolution Hotel in the South End. Check out other hotels in the South End. (not South Boston but The South End. There is a difference)

I stayed at what is now called Revolution Hotel when it was a Y and when it was also called 40 Berkeley Street. I believe that it is now improved and under new / private ownership.

Booking.com is good for research.

Unfortunately that is a very high demand time to visit Boston. Not only is it the beginning of fall colors but also football and regatta season. Head of the Charles starts on October 18. I've stayed at a bare bones inn in Cambridge and even that place is over $300/night for your dates. It's Gingko House and it's pleasant and comfortable but it is basic. https://www.ginkgo.house/. If you don't mind taking the T (subway) into Boston you could look further out.

As has already been mentioned, October is an expensive time to be in Boston - leaf peeping season, Head of the Charles Regatta, parents weekend at many of the colleges/universities. If you give us your budget, we may be able to help you with suggestions on staying slightly outside of Boston but close to public transportation.

Be careful with The Revolution Hotel mentioned earlier. Some of the rooms may be within budget but bathroom will be down the hall.

Hi Mary

When I stayed at 40 Berkeley Street and then the Y, now the Revolution Hotel, the bathrooms were communal and not terribly nice.

But there are also some rooms with private bathrooms. And the Revolution Hotel has been renovated. It has. high ratings on Booking.com

I do not know if the communal bathrooms are improved.

EDIT: I went to booking.com and The Revolution Hotel has a rating of 8.3. There are some rooms with private bathrooms. The communal bathrooms were described as chic as well as a really good idea, etc. The bathrooms got good ratings. Obviously this is not the same establishment as the Y and 40 Berkeley Street, where I have stayed.

"won't break the bank"...What does that mean to you? Perhaps look up on booking.com for your range and then come on and ask people about the location or quality of one you found.

Revere is not near the center of Boston. You might do better than Revere by getting an airport hotel if you can't be downtown. My go to cheap hotel, when I'm in town researching on the cheap, is the Charlesmark Hotel in the Back Bay. The Omni Parker House is a very centrally located one across from the Common. One of my favorites is the Fairmont Copley in the Back Bay. I also love the Boston Harbor Hotel...but there are so many, but very high price in October.

If you're flying in, consider the Comfort Inn/Suites Logan Airport at 85 American Legion Highway in Revere. They have a free shuttle to/from the airport at all hours. We had a very comfortable stay there this spring and the staff are amazing. Revere isn't in town, but may be worth using ride-share to get to central Boston if rates in the city center are too high. We find the Comfort/Quality chain hotels are consistently good and reasonably priced.

I strongly recommend Cambridge Bed and Muffin, if you are happy to walk a little and are interested in seeing Cambridge and not only the center of Boston. You can walk to the Red Line and get into the historic center of Boston easily; you can also enjoy a lovely, quiet part of Cambridge. Inexpensive, very nice owner, and you get to use the fridge. She provides cereals, as I recall, for helping yourself to breakfast. But it is a shared bath. See link for more info. on its location and proximity to public transportation. We've stayed there three times and always enjoyed it very much. It's very tranquil.

Thank you to each kind respondent. We found lodging at a very good location a couple of blocks south of Boston Commons and Garden, very expensive, yet less so than some others. Now to find a place to dock the car while we are there, don’t need it in town but to get to Boston and to get home.
