This was the Best earthquake ever!!

Seriously though, this was the longest, most violent earthquake I have experienced in my 38 years in Alaska. I live about 3 miles from Anchorage International Airport and for the first time I have items all over the floors in my house that fell off of shelves and tables. The house rocked back and forth so violently that the water in all three toilet bowls were sloshed onto the floor! The power is off .

On the good side I see no obvious sign of damage to my house such as cracks in the walls.

We are still experiencing an occasional aftershock but it looks like it will be down hill from here.

It any case I am well equipped with food, water, campstoves and lights, and bottled gas. :)

Gosh, Davey, that sounds like quite the experience. It's good that you have been through earlier, milder quakes, because I think many of us would have really freaked out about what happened today.

Stay safe Davey.

Native Californian here who has been through many.

Always a moment when you think aloud is this shaking going to cease?

Thankfully it does and you are forever grateful Mother Nature didn’t harm you and yours.

Hi everyone, thanks for the kind words. We are still getting the occasional aftershock but it appears the worst is over. My power is still out but it did come for about 10 seconds so I know they are working on it. A friend on the other side of town did have her power restored.

Thankfully I have not heard of any serious injuries or major damage other than some road upheavals and the highway south of Anchorage being closed due to a rock slide (the road runs alongside a sheer cliff face.

I have heard the the airport is open as well as some stores. I have not ventured out yet because my major fear 🙄 is traffic since traffic lights do not operate without power as people do like to see what is going on.

Frank II I have been thinking lately that you need to come visit and relax for a while!

Claudia, "always a moment when you think aloud is this shaking going to cease? " Ha, you nailed that one!!

Thank you, Davey, for letting us know you are ok and hope all our other friends are as well. I remember the last really big earthquake in Anchorage in the mid 60s. Hoping the damage to people and property isn't as bad as that one was although a 7 is certainly significant. It has been an awful past month or so for our friends n California and Alaska. Can I dare hope the year at least ends with no more worrisome occurrences?

Ok here, but a bit in shock really. Minor knee injury when I fell running out of my gym ( as the power went out almost immediately after the shaking started and ceiling tiles started to fall). It feels better now and the rest of my family is fine. Still no power and minor clean up at my house. Thanks for the concern.

Davey, I'm in London into early January and then back to the U.S. I think I'll wait until it gets a little warmer before heading up to Alaska. :)

Anyway, I've had my fill of earthquakes living in Southern California. I lived 17 miles away from the epicenter of the 1994 Northridge quake.

Stay safe.
