Best Ryokan with open air Onsen & snow view, in Tohoku accessible via public transportation.

3 adults looking to stay at a Ryokan with an open air Onsen with a snow view at the middle or end of December, 2026.

We've been to Japan a couple of times but never north of Tokyo and Narita.
We'd like to find a special place to relax for a few days. Prefer a coed Onsen experience but it is not essential. We do not ski and are not into outdoor sports but want to be in the snow and wouldn't mind trying some snow experiences like snow walking or sledding. We like culture, more authentic experiences with great food, sake tours, wood making exhibits and cultural events.

We will be coming from visiting Seoul and after will head to Tokyo so we don't need big crowds and big attractions small museums and sites would be nice.

Hope to find a smaller ryokan in a small town where we can walk around and see some sites.

We stayed at Yatsusankan Ryokan in Hida and absolutely loved it. It was a walkable small town and the ryokan had Japanese style rooms, kind, attentive service and fabulous food in an authentic 170 year old inn. We are trying to find a similar experience in Tohoku where we hope to have snow.

Appreciate any thoughts and suggestions.

Tohoku is a rather large area. How far from Tokyo are you willing to go? Aomori is remote and very snowy, but offers great onsen. Zao in Yamagata is famous with lots of ryokans.

What is your budget? Ryokan stays range from reasonable to exorbitant (think second mortgage). However, it's an experience not to be missed.

This looks great as there is an onsen by a waterfall:

We’re willing to take up to a 6 hr train ride although closer makes it easier. We don’t mind spending some money on a nice ryokan but we’re not in the thousands and thousands a night bucket.
I did look at the ryokan near the waterfall and it looks lovely. Thank You for sharing. Unfortunately, the reviews were not great. We’re really looking for some high-quality service.

Ter, in October 2025, I traveled with my daughter, her husband and my then 10 month old granddaughter to a lovely village West of Sendai called Akiu. The onsen stay was fabulous. I think you would enjoy it too. Here’s a link. A train journey from Tokyo takes about 3 1/2 hours.
