Did you decide to change your planned location from Honolulu, Oahu to Maui? Location will probably make a difference in tour choices and cost, and I see that cost was of concern (Yes, it would be $1,000 or so for the 2 of you from Oahu).

We rented a car and bought the Shaka Guide smartphone app. And used the Road to Hana tour. This app doesn't need cellphone service, just GPS, which your smartphone should have. The tour app had wonderful voice narration, gave a lot of good information and history and told us what waterfall or viewpoint was up ahead and when to pull over.

I can’t imagine any tour bus being able to navigate the tight turns on the Road to Hana. It’s very nice to rent a car which you will need for Maui anyway, and be able to stop at the little waterfalls and scenery along the way.

If anyone in your group is prone to motion sickness, be aware that the road to Hana can turn your scenic drive into a vomit comet experience pretty quickly - there are a lot of hairpin turns in rapid succession.

Personally, I loved the drive, but someone I know went green around the gills after about 20 minutes. YMMV.

hey hey debbie
what do you mean by best? spelling correction is "road to hana". tours in vans will last about 10 to 12 hours. your last post was 5 months ago with no response from you. when is this vacation planned?
is this a day trip from honolulu? you will need to look at flight schedules to and from, especially last flight times out of maui. if you miss flight you will need to spend the night in maui which adds more cost to rent a room with flight back next day (hawaiian or southwest airlines both fly interisland). will tour van pick you up at airport or will you have to taxi to destination start, taxi back to aiport for flight back to honolulu. lots of thinking to decide
spend some days in honolulu and split with some days in maui as multicity ticket (fly to honolulu (HNL) and home from maui (OGG) or vice versa. rent a car in maui and drive yourself to hana as derek mentions, it's still a long day. also agree with david about getting carsick. been there done that with a friend, was bad and said she'd never do it again. to each it's own
mauihideaway.com
read up about the road to hana tours, they are not cheap or budget friendly to some people, it's your decision to make. good luck

This is what we did also. It was terrific. Lots of great info with just the right sprinkling of RickSteves-y cornball.

One gigantic note of caution…

The road’s popularity as a tourist route is well-earned. …But that popularity has led to congestion and a LOT of anger from locals who actually live and work along this coast. There are particularly bad stretches and you’d be advised not to end up in these sections from 3pm-6pm unless you want to see a lot of one-finger salutes.
