Belize - Yucatan

We're traveling to Playa del Carmen in a few weeks and are wondering about traveling to Belize City either ground or air or other.

What exactly is your question?

Been there (both places) more than a few times, have taken the bus from PdC to Belize City once or twice, but that was about 20 years ago. I suspect things have not changed a whole lot with the bus (Playa del Carmen, OTOH, has certainly changed dramatically - it's alleged to be the fastest-growing city in the western hemisphere, and I believe it).

I don't believe that going from PdC to Belize City by air is possible/practical. There's an airstrip in PdC but I don't believe there's much (anything?) in the way of scheduled air service there. There are (I think) flights between Cancun and Belize City. Google Tropic Air Belize. Tropic Air is fine - I flew them a couple times a year ago (Belize to Tikal). Big, single engine Cessnas - fun.

The bus is OK, but time consuming. Not terribly scenic. When I did it, it was on a "Bluebird" - same model as US school bus (same uncomfortable seats, too - felt like I was back in elementary school). Our bus stopped constantly to pick up/drop off workers from the cane fields. Took a long time. I believe there are more direct (perhaps more comfortable) buses now. Check ADO, the Mexican bus company.

Is Belize City your destination? (I hope not) You done any research? (Hope so) Belize City is not a terribly attractive destination, IMHO. Be careful there, use common sense - it's not exactly Disneyland, and can be a bit sketchy.

Are there any safety concerns about traveling from PdC to Belize City? The primary reason to visit Belize City is the international airport.

If "The primary reason to visit Belize City is the international airport", then why not fly into Cozumel and take the ferry to Playa del Carmen?

why not fly into Cozumel and take the ferry to Playa del Carmen?

If you're looking to save money, Cozumel doesn't make a lot of sense (served by only a handful of airlines, not a lot of competition). A better option nearby is the most obvious: Cancun. The town (hotel zone) of Cancun is not a great place to spend time, but the airport is the best hub in the region if you're looking to fly somewhere distant. It's certainly easy, quick, and cheap to get to/from CUN.

On the bus from PdC? No, I would have no worries (well, certainly not in the daytime, and probably at night - but I'd do it in the day).

The safety concerns are in Belize City itself. It's not exactly Mogadishu, but it's surprisingly sketchy - if you're expecting something like Playa del Carmen, you will be very surprised. Belize is not really a Latin American country - it's like a poor Caribbean island broke loose and drifted west until it ran aground on the shore of Central America. Culturally, linguistically, ethnically and in other ways, Belize is really different from Mexico. I can't think of a good reason to go to Belize City unless it's to connect to somewhere else. If you're just connecting - in the daytime - and you have even a little common sense, you'll be fine. I would NOT wander the streets of Belize City after dark, and I'd be more careful than usual even during the daytime. I've been there several times and do not like the place. Other parts of Belize are great, of course.

The primary reason to visit Belize City is the international airport.

Why? If you're in Playa del Carmen, you will have better/cheaper options from the airport in Cancun. Is there something specific you're looking for there? Have you researched it? I'd think that any option you can find in Belize City would be available cheaper/easier from Cancun's airport. Only exceptions might be puddle-jumper flights out to the Belize islands.

I'm also not entirely clear on your question?

If you're planning to spend any time in Belize City, be aware that government authorities recommend "exercising a high degree of caution", "due to a high rate of violent crime throughout the country."

Thanks for all input. My husband is a retired Delta employee and we have flight benefits which would allow us to fly into Belize City and depart from Cancun or vice versa. The only reason to do so would be to add another notch to our limited list of countries visited.
