Beaches+ in Thailand

I am traveling to Thailand in January and am hoping to spend a few days at a beach snorkeling ans hanging out on the beach. We are hoping to find a less touristy place and understand that may not be possible.

I will be in Chang Rai at a conference for the first week and plan to go to Chang Mai after that. Any tips on other current great places to visit in Thailand? It’s my first visit, but my wife lived in Thailand 32 years ago.

Also do you still have to buy health insurance for Thailand?

Thanks!

I never travel without health insurance. Accidents happen.

Have you been to Angkor Wat in Cambodia? That's definitely worth 3 days. You'll have to fly through Bangkok. But you'll probably be flying from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai to Bangkok to a beach spot anyway. It's said there are more remote beaches that you need to access by private vehicle - either with a driver or own your own.

There are places to see between Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. I had a private tour guide with a car and made a full day of the journey.
