BASEBALL ROAD TRIP!!! OH, KY, TN, AR & a little MS

My sister and I have decided that this summer is the perfect opportunity to visit the minor league franchises of our Seattle Mariners. The Tacoma Rainiers (AAA), Everett Aqua Sox (Short A), and Modesto Nuts (AA), are easy. What we are really excited about is a road trip to see the West Virgina Power (A) in Charleston, WV, and the Arkansas Travelers (AA) in Little Rock. The teams are only about 10 hours straight driving time apart, which gives us ample time to meander from one to the other over the course of a week or so.

The general outline is to fly in and out of Columbus, OH (Alaska as a direct flight and we have a companion fare), rent a car and drive away. I have the team schedules and we'll figure out those logistics. Also, just as general info, sis worked for several years in Portsmouth, OH and we've both visited many places in WV, KY, TN. So, I guess what I'm looking for is any suggestions for places to see beyond the obvious (Dollywood, Grand Old Opry, Graceland, etc.), and any food recommendations. We will also be dipping into Mississsippi at some point because we have to add it to our state total. So suggestions for northern MS also welcome.

Thanks in advance!
Jodi

Thanks Sam!

I like that cave concert idea. I realized that the one thing I didn't include in my original post was that we might like to hit a bit of the bourbon trail. This fits right in.

I suspect that the Mississippi part will either be Tupelo or Oxford. So I'll keep that in mid as well.

Nashville is a grate city to visit. Also, consider Cherokee, NC and Gatlinburg, Tenn. The Rocket and Space centers in Huntsville, ALA (northern ALA) is nice.

Where do you anticipate being in Tennessee? And how long has it been since you've been to Nashville? (The city seems to change yearly, at least the downtown parts.)

Sam: I hadn't even thougt of Bonnaroo. We might be there around that time. Still a lot of things in flux timewise. I'm flexible, but my sister's schedule might not allow for it.

geovagriffith: I noticed that Huntsville might be a possibility, but I'll check out Cherokee and Gatlinburg. Thanks!

aquamarinesteph: Probably Memphis, and Nashville mostly - or along that route. I have a good friend in Nashville, though I haven't been there in a number of years. I think the massive renovation of the Parthenon was just getting underway!

If you come out of WV via Knoxville and Chattanooga you could easily stop in Birmingham, AL and catch a game with their AA team, the Barons. They have a really nice ballpark. (Sit over the 3rd base line for the best view and to avoid looking into the sun.)

KGC - Thanks! I'll put that in the folder. I've made a list up of all of the MiLB teams along the way, but I don't think I did a route that included that yet. There are so many teams in that area. It's great! And special thanks for the seating advice. Always looking for the shady spots!

Kim - Eureka Springs sounds lovely, but I don't think we'll be going that far west.

Any plans to visit the Columbus Clippers in Ohio? The (relatively) new stadium is amazing for a minor league park and is light years above the old one. Since Cincy and Cleveland have teams, Columbus won’t be getting one but it’s the next best thing.
