Bali--Hotels in April/July

Hello folks:

I will be in Bali twice next year, once in late April and again in late July/early August. Both trips will be short (4-6 nights). I am a seasoned traveler, but still, I am a solo female and somewhat apprehensive about safety. I am not interested in clubbing or bar hopping, though at night, I would like to have dinner at local eateries outside the hotel.

So, I have pinned down two popular areas to stay in: Ubud and Canggu/Seminyak. I like Ubud because it's unique and quintessential "Balinese"--I do want to relax in green hills next to terraced rice fields and listen to humming birds and rivers running through the valley. For Canggu and Seminyak, it's more about the cafes and walkable streets for food and shopping. I don't need to be that close to the beach because, correct me if I am wrong, most beaches in Bali don't offer the crystal clear/turquoise water that I'd like to see. For that, I'd have to visit Lombok, but it's not safe to do so alone. I will still visit one or two beaches, so as to "check the box."

So, my questions are:
1. Should I stay in Ubd in April and then Canggu/Seminyak in July/August, or vice versa? I know that there may still be some rain in April, but it'd be pretty dry July/August.

  1. Any 2- or 3-star hotels that you like or dislike? I know that the I need to choose my hotels wisely, as some are located on the main streets (noise, privacy,...etc.). My budget is less than $80 for April and less than $100 for July/August. I don't need the Ritz but don't want a hostel.

  2. Is it safe to take an Uber (or similar local service) in Bali as a single female?

4.Other than the weather, what other factors should I consider?

Thank you and happy holidays!!!

Can't help you with hotel recs or seasonal considerations, our trip there was many years ago, but one correction:

correct me if I am wrong, most beaches in Bali don't offer the crystal
clear/turquoise water that I'd like to see.

That's true if you go to Cancun - excuse me, I mean Kuta - the over-touristed surfer party mecca of the southeast. Which, if you're headed to Canggu/Seminyak, I guess you kinda sorta are. Of course tastes vary, but we were pretty turned off by the vibe around Kuta, and were happy to see it recede in the rear view mirror as we headed to better parts (including Ubud, which is lovely, though now quite popular, too, for good reason). Other than that touristy corner around Kuta, we loved Bali. As SCUBA divers, we were seeking those crystal clear, turquoise waters, and they were easily found once we got away from Kuta. We had some of our best diving experiences up in the opposite corner of the island (Menjangan), along the north coast (Tulamben), and from Candidasa in the east.

Crystal clear water can be a bit of a challenge, though, if you also want fine white sand beaches at the same time. Some of the places we went to the north had lovely clear water, but with rocky shorelines...perfect for SCUBA diving (ideal, in fact, since fish typically don't hang out at sandy beaches, they like rocks), but less ideal if you want to lay out in the radiation. The popular resorts around Kuta are there because of the broad, sandy beaches, which they have aplenty.

On the safety issue, let me reassure you Bali is very safe - obviously as always keep your wits about you, but no reason to be particularly concerned.

On transport, Uber doesn't operate in SE Asia. Our local equivalents are Grab and Gojek. For point to point trips in the south, those are the easiest options, but if you're out for the day it's common to hire a driver to take you around for the whole day - there are plenty waiting around popular tourists spots and hotels, or you can Google people's recommendations online and just whatsapp them. Lots of recommendations on the Bali Tripadvisor forum, which is very active. My recollection is that local drivers in Ubud restrict how/where/whether you can be picked up by Grab/Gojek drivers, but not sure if that is still the case.

What sort of vibe are you looking for? The south of Bali is VERY congested particularly Seminyak. It is indeed the Australian equivalent of Cancun, not to mention a cheap weekend getaway from Singapore. The north is really lovely though. See David's comments above.

Thank you for the replies thus far.

I heard that Canggu/Seminyak is party central for Bali and that Kuta is a backpacker's heaven. I neither party nor backpack. However, I love specialty coffee. I know that there are several coffee shops in Canggu/Semiyak that are very good and some are owned by Indonesia's specialty coffee champions. So, that's why I am picking this area. I also heard that traffic is horrendous (same in central Ubud), but that's ok.

I am guessing that I should stay in Canggu/Seminyak in April and Ubud in July/August. This is because, in Ubud, I will do more outdoorsy sightseeing and need dry weather. Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks a million!

We were in Bali in August of 2019. I'm not sure that I would think of Ubud as quintessential anymore, it was quite busy with tourists and had more western restaurants than many other places. However we did enjoy it, there is quite a bit to see. If I were going back and trying to find the rice fields I would look at places close to the Campuhan ridge walk. I seem to remember there being lodging near there, and it is a bit more peaceful.
Everyone arranged drivers for us. If you ask your first accommodation they will have one pick you up at the airport.
I loved Munduk and I think it is possibly the feel you are looking for. In August there was the smell of drying cloves and we had wonderful coffee. It was much cheaper than Ubud. We hiked to 3 waterfalls. I ended up by myself some of the time ( my husband thought suckling pig at the market was a good idea) and I felt very safe.
We also enjoyed Amed, although it is very quiet and perhaps less to do. We arranged to go out on a snorkel tour from there and very much enjoyed it.

I had considered Nusa lembongan. You might want to see if it appeals to you on your own.

We did not really like Sanur. It seemed to have lost its community feel.

Seminyak seems to have been pretty much taken over by Australian style coffee shops - to the extent it felt like being back in Sydney at times. But basically the whole south, including Ubud, is very touristy. The north is another story.
