Any opinions on spending a week in Baja? Is it safe? Cost to stay near the beach? Worth the 1000 mile trip?
Get a National Geographic Traveler Mexico book (there are probably better and more thorough books out there as well) at the library or elsewhere. Baja can be remote, rugged, unpaved, and off-the-beaten path in many areas. It really depends on what kind of adventure you're looking for. I assume you're not talking about the typical tourist resorts.
Spent two weeks Xmas 2015 in city of La Paz, great place, always felt safe. Flew - San Diego has a slick connection to Tijuana airport (CBX Cross Border Crossing) - airfares far better Tijuana-La Paz than out of San Diego. Rented the excellent, & exc.-located, house, Casa de la Vaquita, two blocks from the beach, terrific ex-pat American owners. Cost escapes me, but Google the Casa.
Peso was 17 to the $ then. We would go back.
We own a condo in San Jose del Cabo, sister city to Cabo San Lucas and visit Cabo twice a year. Plans are to retire there from the British Columbia winters. Our condo rents for $100US a night, and I'm sure you can find some for less and more. All inclusives are all over the place. Overall, I find it quite inexpensive and nothing beats the weather and beaches. Totally safe. And the big plus--cheap beer.

Thanks for the advice!
Surely you would enjoy Cabo San Lucas, which is teaming with tourists. Great weather too. Consider La Paz or Loreto.
