Australia, Jetstar carry on size

I've finished packing for a trip to Australia where we are taking three domestic flights on Jetstar. Their carry on limit, converted to inches is approximately 22 x 14 x 9. My bag is 17 x 13 x 11. Computing volume, my bag is smaller than the limit. Any idea my bag is an issue? I'm not trying to deceive, just want to follow the spirit of the rules. If I have to drop it in a box, it's soft sided, so I probably can squish where need be. I will admit to being spoiled by Delta and their leniency. I am already checking a bag.

As an Australian, I can say Australian airlines, including the budget ones like Jetstar, are generally pretty lenient. I've certainly had my carryon measured (and very rarely weighed) - they're not trying to catch you out, so should be fine.

You'll be checking in at a kiosk, so it's only at the gate they'll look at your carryon bag. Unless it's blatantly over, it's unlikely to be a problem.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with Simon. Jetstar makes a good portion of their revenue from charging luggage penalties at the airport. They also police their policy both at check in and often at the gate.
Having said that, your bag will be fine as it is not going to look too large and although they have the sizing frames to test it, they would only do that if it really was noticeably too big. As long as it fits in an overhead locker, it should be fine.
Another thing they are very strict on is weight limits. If your carry on is over 7kg, you are likely to be weighed and charged. Buy one of those luggage scales and if over 7kg, stuff things into your pockets. They are ok if a passenger wears overcoats and layers of clothing with electronics in every pocket.
Qantas and Virgin Australia are much more lenient, although Virgin announced that they were having a "baggage crackdown" from February 2026.

Soft sided so no issues. Jetstar can be grumpy about the weight though.
Not sure of your dates, but a couple of things to know. Victoria just had a short but severe heatwave, 3 days at my place of 44 to 45° C. This led to a number of bushfires. A lot of areas were affected. Currently there are some active fires in the Otway Ranges not a long way from the GOR. Also there was a massive dump of rain (170mm) in the GOR region which caused sever flash flooding and accompanying damage around Wye River. Significant enough to carry off cars and vans.
Hopefully none of these will impact your trip but always good to know what's been happening.
Cheers.

Thanks for the info and for the updates. I can see that Sydney is forecasted for rain every day we are there which makes me sad, but it sounds like it could be badly needed.

I appreciate the info on this and all the help with the trip planning. Its great to be able to post a question and know I'll get expert help.
