Does Australia and New Zealand have the same electrical plug? Will any of the plug adapters used in Europe by Americans work? If so, which one? Is the voltage the same as in Europe?
Yes, they do. Plug adapter used in Europe will not work. The voltage for both countries is 230V. You can check this information for any country here: http://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plug-voltage-by-country/
Thank Ilja. That website will come in handy.
You will need a 3-prong plug adaptor that is more similar to the UK plug, but not the same. So you will need a new dedicated plug adaptor for these countries.
you may see references to australia using 240v, which was 'historically' the 'nominated' voltage. australia also uses 50hz (not 60hz, that is used in the US) generally not a problem for tourists.
Of recent years the sockets used on extension leads etc now also incorporate a 'protective' surround , that can cause problems with fitting some older plugs. once again, usually not a problem for tourists.
plug adapters are generally available in australia for typically $10 AUD at various stores.
check your equipment rating plate to see that it can handle the higher voltage and different frequency.
hope this helps.
Thank you everyone for all your great information.
