I have a 36 hour stay in Auckland on a cruise in February; I've been to Auckland before and wasn't wowed with the city.....I'm considering taking the ferry to Rotoroa Island (weather pending) and walking around there for a while. Any experiences with Rotoroa Island? Any interesting areas of the city I might have missed in my previous short stay that are worth exploring.
Rotoroa Island is interesting, but if it's cloudy (or rainy like the day we went) you won't be able to see anything from the top of the observation point - the pictures of the view do look great. It does make for an interesting day of hiking through forested areas and the ferry ride is pretty getting over to it. You might want to look at Waiheke Island as an alternative -- pretty town, a number of good wineries where you can have tastings (we took the hop on/off bus as a way to get around more easily). It's a much bigger island with lots to see and do. We liked it alot more that Rotoroa, but maybe that's because it poured rain on us for much of the day on Rotoroa. Both are interesting and well worth a day, they are just different what they offer. Check them both out - easily reached via ferry from the waterfront. Enjoy!!
I'll second Waiheke. Especially if you are a wine drinker. I'll also throw in Davenport - cute shopping area
I think Donna may have fallen victim to spellcheck. It's Devonport - not Davenport ... and however you spell it it's lovely.
And I agree that Waiheke would be a good day trip as well.
Good catch Robert but totally operator error on my part. I even looked at the map and still spelled it wrong.
