Aqaba to Eilat

has anyone crossed from Jordan to Israel lately by land border, looking for some suggestions on best way to do the crossing

We did a day trip from the kibbutz where we were staying in the Arava on the Israel side to Aqaba and back, parking at the border crossing (no fee), walking to the border buildings under a very hot sun (bring hat and sunscreen), doing the passport/visa formalities and changing money at the border, walking through and then taking a short taxi ride to downtown Aqaba. When we finished sightseeing, we easily took a Jordanian taxi from downtown back to the border crossing, went through the formalities and then retrieved our car.

My memory is that taxis were easily available on both sides of the border crossing. From the border crossing to downtown Eilat is just 10-15 minutes.

I recommend Kibbutz Ketura, not far from the border crossing, about 25 miles north of Eilat. It was founded by progressive English-speaking idealists in the 1970s and now has a guest house, an environmental institute, several high-tech agricultural projects spearheaded by a prize-winning scientist, a swimming pool, date fields and typical kibbutz food (loads of fresh veggies and dairy products, meat only at one meal per day).
